Brittney Hadley knocked home the winning runs in the opening game and the University of Mary split a pair of Northern Sun softball games at Upper Iowa University. The Marauders held on for an 8-6 win in game one and the Peacocks rallied to claim the second contest 5-3.
The Marauders (16-13 overall, 5-7 NSIC) exploded for a 6-0 lead in the first game.
Allison Brown started the scoring with a run-scoring double in the first inning, eventually scoring on a passed ball.
Julissa Perales followed with a home run and U-Mary led 3-0 after the first inning.
After a bases-loaded walk to
Erin Keen scored one run, Brown and Hadley produced run-scoring singles to increase the Marauders lead to 6-0 in the second.
Not demoralized by the deficit, the Peacocks (16-12, 3-5) scored five times in the home half of the second and once in the third to even the score.
Hadley pushed U-Mary back in front with an RBI double down the left field line in the fourth inning to score Brown. The sophomore third baseman provided the Marauders an insurance run with a sacrifice fly to score
Jessica Alvarado in the sixth.
Brown finished the opener 3-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored. Hadley was 2-for-3 with three RBI. Alvarado went 2-for-3 with two walks and two runs scored.
Cherlynn Trujillo picked up the win with four innings of hitless relief. She walked one and struck out three.
The Marauders again jumped out to an early lead in the second game when Brown blasted a three-run bomb in the first inning.
Brown's homer was the first and the last hit of the game for U-Mary. Jacqueline Flood silenced the Marauders bats the rest of the way. After an Upper Iowa error following the home run, Flood retired 16 straight batters and 21 of 22 to end the game.
The Peacocks scored twice in the first and pulled even at 3-3 with a single run in the third. An RBI single by Katie Mnichowicz followed by a double steal in the fourth provided Upper Iowa with the winning runs.
U-Mary is next scheduled to play at MSU Moorhead on Wednesday, April 10.
