Trujillo Tremendous but Marauders Bats Stifled in Warriors Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Winona, MN – Despite two dominating pitching performances by Cherlynn Trujillo, the University of Mary dropped a pair of Northern Sun softball games at Winona State University. The Warriors captured both games by identical 1-0 scores as the Marauders were unable to dent the WSU pitching.

Trujillo allowed just one earned run while throwing two complete games for the Marauders. The junior from San Jose, CA, gave up 10 hits and two walks while fanning 10 in 12 innings. While her season record fell to 11-5, Trujillo also lowered her earned run average to 1.80.

In the opening game, U-Mary (15-12 overall, 4-6 NSIC) threatened in the first inning as hitters reached on a walk and a hit batter but both baserunners were stranded.

The Warriors (20-6, 5-1) scored the lone run of the opening contest in the bottom of the first. After Trujilla struck out the first hitter she faced, WSU responded with three straight hits, including a run-scoring single by Morgan Lintz.

The Marauders had numerous opportunities to score but couldn't convert against Warriors hurler Britt Stewart. U-Mary loaded the bases in the second but Erin Keen lined out to second base to end the inning. In the fourth, the first two U-Mary hitters reached on a hit and an error but WSU turned two on a strike out and a pick off throw to second base.

Stewart eventually got into a groove, retiring the last seven hitters she faced. She allowed two hits and four walks while spinning the seven-inning complete game win.

Trujillo allowed one run on seven hits and a walk while striking out seven.

In the second game, Trujillo found herself in another pitching duel, this time with Ashley Walker.

Despite hits in each of the first three innings, the Marauders were unable to plate a run.

The Warriors offense also struggled through the first three, generating just one hit and a walk.

A Marauders miscue in the fourth led to the lone run of the game. With one out, Lintz reached on an error. Pinch runner Natalie Kalmes went to third on a single by Stewart and scored on a groundout to second by Jenny Nelson.

In the sixth, Keen walked and Allison Brown singled but neither would score. With one final chance in the seventh, Demaree Rodriguez singled to lead off the inning but Stewart would strike out the next two Marauders hitters before inducing a ground out to end the game.

Trujilla gave up just three hits, one walk and an unearned run while striking out three in the six inning complete game. Walker struck out eight and was touched for five hits and a walk.

Jessica Alvarado and Rodriguez each had two of U-Mary's five hits.

The Marauders continue south for a doubleheader at Upper Iowa University on Sunday, April 7.
