Box Score 2 Bismarck, ND – Big innings meant a big day for the University of Mary. The Marauders posted multi-run innings four times in two games to sweep Bemidji State University 10-7 and 9-4 in a pair of Northern Sun baseball games played on the U-Mary campus.
The Marauders posted 30 hits in the doubleheader.
Cory Herback and
Jason Shaul led the U-Mary hit parade with five knocks each.
The home team on the scoreboard since the games were originally scheduled to be played in Bemidji, MN, the Beavers scored single runs in the bottom of the first and third innings to take an early lead.
The Marauders exploded for four runs in the top of the fourth inning to pull in front 4-2. Herback singled with one out and stole second before scoring on a single by Shaul. After a strikeout,
Kyal Williams followed with a single to center. A balk by BSU starting pitcher Phil Bray moved the runners into scoring position and
Derek Somerville took advantage with a single through the left side to drive home Shaul to tie the game.
Michael Stevenson pushed U-Mary in front with a single to right to bring home Williams.
Still not done, Somerville stole third base and scored the final run of the inning on a wild pitch.
After scoring twice in the fourth to pull even, the Beavers scored three times in the fifth to regain the lead at 7-4. Back to back run-scoring doubles by Lewis Baumann and Chad Hanson drove home the final two runs.
U-Mary claimed control of the game in the sixth inning with a 6-run outburst. Two walks and a single by Williams loaded the bases to open the inning. Somerville drove in the first two runs with a double to left-center. After another walk loaded the bases,
Alex Deyle hit a game-winning single to center, scoring two. The Marauders closed the inning with Mo Burrough driving home a run with a sacrifice bunt and an RBI infield single by Herback, boosting the U-Mary lead to 10-7.
Christopher Jolly closed out the win for the Marauders. After allowing a leadoff double, the senior righthander retired the next three BSU hitters for his first save of the season.
Herback had three hits, scoring once and driving in two. Sommerville was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and three RBI. Shaul finished 2-for-3, scoring twice and driving in one run. Williams also was 2-for-3 and scored once. In total U-Mary pounded out 11 hits.
Chad Hanson led the Beavers with four hits, scoring twice and driving in one. Zach Braun added three hits.
U-Mary started fast in game two behind a 3-run home run by
James Carroll in the top of the first inning. His first round tripper of the season, Carroll's blast was the start of nine straight runs by the Marauders.
The Marauders added single runs in the second and the third innings as both Herback and Stevenson posted run-scoring singles.
A four-run fourth inning sealed the win for U-Mary. Shaul doubled home the first two runs and Williams and Somerville both plated runs on singles.
Jeff Skadeland kept the Beavers in check all game. With the help of two double plays, the senior righty held BSU scoreless over the first four innings before BSU scored once in the fifth. The Beavers would add solitary runs in the next three innings, including two solo home runs by Jaryd Marks.
After struggling in his last two outings, Skadeland improved to 4-1 this season. In eight innings, he struck out five and allowed 10 hits, one walk and four earned runs.
Carroll was 3-for-4 with two runs scored and three runs batted in. Shaul went 3-for-5, scoring twice and driving in two. Deyle also had three hits, scoring twice. Herback, Williams, Sommerville and Stevenson all had two hits. Every player in the lineup had at least one base hit as the team pounded out 19 hits total.
Matt Ellinghuysen had three hits for BSU. Jaryd Marks was 2-for-4 with two home runs.
The Marauders (12-7-1 overall, 3-1 Northern Sun) will again host the Beavers (12-14, 2-6) at 12 noon on Sunday, April 7. The conclusion of the 4-game NSIC set will again be played on the U-Mary campus.
