Marauders Swept by Blue Hawks to Close Non-Conference Schedule

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bismarck, ND – In one final tune-up before beginning league play, the University of Mary was swept in a non-conference doubleheader on the road to Dickinson State University, 1-0 and 12-2.

The Marauders open Northern Sun play with a twin bill against 14th ranked Minnesota State University, Mankato on Wednesday, April 3. With neither the Marauders nor the Mavericks home fields in playable condition, the two NSIC foes will face off at Astoria Ballpark in Dickinson.

Michael Vollrath gave the Marauders a chance to win the opener, holding the Blue Hawks off the scoreboard until there were two outs in the seventh and final inning. The sophomore lefthander scattered 11 hits and didn't walk or strike out a batter in the game.

Jon Mendoza singled up the middle with one out in the bottom of the seventh for Dickinson State. After a walk to Chris Antoku moved him into scoring position, Mendoza scored from second on a game-winning walk off base hit through the left side by Jake Coyle.

The Marauders had opportunities to score early but couldn't find a clutch hit, stranding five runners in the first two innings. Alex Deyle posted two of the five U-Mary hits. Jordan Tescher and Mendoza each had three hits for DSU.

The Blue Hawks didn't wait nearly as long to score in the second game, posting two runs on the board in both the first and third innings. DSU tacked on three runs in each of both the fifth and the sixth innings before ending the game early with another two runs in the seventh.

Down 4-0, the Marauders cut the deficit in half in the fifth inning when a sacrifice fly by Alex Deyle scored U-Mary's first run of the day and Marice Burrough doubled home the second. DSU then scored the next eight runs.

Burrough recorded two of the Marauders six hits. Chris Mjelstad went 4-for-4 with three runs scored and three RBIs for DSU. Eric Seiler was 2-for-2 with three runs batted in. The Blue Hawks recorded 15 hits.
