Huskies Punish Marauders with Power Game

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bismarck, ND – Jason Shaul collected five hits on the day for the University of Mary but the Marauders couldn't match the power game displayed by nationally ranked and Northern Sun-leading St. Cloud State University. The Huskies crushed six home runs – three in each game – to one by the Marauders and SCSU swept the conference doubleheader by scores of 10-2 and 10-4.
 
A junior from New Ulm, Shaul went 2-for-3 in the opening game and closed out the day with a 3-for-3 effort that included two walks, a double, an RBI and a run scored. The infielder is now hitting .355 on the season.
 
Ranked ninth in one national poll and 11th in another, SCSU (25-5 overall, 13-1 NSIC) struck first in the opener, posting four runs in the second inning. Zach Hoffman, who homered in both games, connected on a three run shot to start the scoring.
 
The Marauders (15-15-1, 6-9) sliced the deficit in half in the bottom of two when Mo Burrough connected for a double deep to left field to score Sam Ingemansen and James Carroll.
 
Neither team scored again until the fifth when SCSU posted two runs. A 2-run Huskies home run keyed a 3-run sixth and a solo shot in the seventh provided the final run in a 10-2 contest.
 
Shaul collected two of the Marauders six hits. Hoffman was one of four Huskies with two hits.
 
In game two, Hoffman again homered in the second inning to give the Huskies an early 2-0 lead.
 
Marauders miscues in the third allowed two Huskies to score, increasing the SCSU lead to 4-0.
 
U-Mary sliced the deficit in half in the third on a run-scoring triple by Burrough, followed by an RBI double two batters later by Shaul. A solo home run by Carroll pulled the Marauders within 4-3 in the fourth.
 
The biggest blow of the game came in the sixth inning when Eric Loxercamp hit a grand slam to left field for SCSU, increasing the Huskies lead to 8-3.  
 
A run-scoring single by Carroll in the seventh scored Shaul to close the gap to 8-4, but another home run by SCSU in the seventh, a 2-run shot to center by Sean Borman, closed the scoring in the 10-4 Huskies win.
 
The Marauders recorded 10 hits and earned six walks but stranded 11 baserunners in the game two loss. U-Mary also committed a ghastly five errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs.
Carroll joined Shaul with producing three hits in the game. The senior scored once and drove in two. Burrough, a fellow senior, had two hits, a double and a triple.
 
Hoffman was one of three SCSU players with two hits.
 
The Marauders and the Huskies conclude their four game series with a doubleheader at 12 noon on Monday, April 29, at the U-Mary baseball field.
