Power Game Drives Marauders to Split with Cougars

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Sioux Falls, SD – A leadoff home run by Marice Burrough headlined a trio of round trippers for the University of Mary and Jeff Skadeland and Shane Trattles combined for a shutout as the Marauders opened the day with a 5-0 Marauders win over the University of Sioux Falls. The Cougars responded with a 4-0 win in the night cap and U-Mary and USF split a Northern Sun baseball doubleheader.

The twin bill was originally scheduled for Wednesday in Bismarck, ND, but poor weather and field conditions moved the games to the campus of Augustana College.

Burrough provided a jolt in the opening game ashe lined the first pitch in the bottom of the first over the right field fence for a quick 1-0 U-Mary (15-13-1 overall, 6-7 NSIC) lead.

After Skadeland escaped a bases-loaded jam in the fourth inning without allowing a run, the Marauders blasted back-to-back home runs in the home half of the inning. Jason Shaul cracked a 2-run homer to start and Kyal Williams followed with a solo shot.

James Carroll closed out the scoring with a run-scoring triple in the sixth inning. It was the first three-bagger of his college career for the senior.

Skadeland improved to 5-2 on the season, holding USF (16-20, 11-11) scoreless over five innings. He allowed three hits and four walks while striking out one. After Skadeland walked the first two batters of the sixth inning, Trattles entered the game to retire the next three hitters and keep USF off the scoreboard. He also pitched a scoreless seventh inning to record his first save of the year.

Williams recorded two of the Marauders six hits. Noah Durkin posted two of USF's four hits.

Sioux Falls pitcher Noah Coleman dominated the second game, allowing three hits and two walks while striking out five in eight innings.

U-Mary threatened to open the scoring when Derek Somerville hit a one out double, but he was thrown out at third attempting to advance on a wild pitch.

USF crossed the plate first in the fourth inning. Damian Kardas opened the inning with his second triple of the game and scored on a Kelby Bestee single. The Cougars added a single run in the sixth and to in the seventh.

Two Cougars errors in the ninth appeared to open the door for a Marauders rally but Henry Ojeda pitched a scoreless inning of relief to close out the game for USF.

Three different Marauders had hits in the game. Kardas led USF with three hits – two triples and a double. He scored twice and drove in a run.

The Marauders return to Bismarck to host St. Cloud State University in a four game set on Sunday and Monday, April 28-29, beginning at 12 noon both days. The games were original set for Saturday and Sunday but wet field conditions pushed the games back a day.
