Box Score 2 St. Cloud, MN—
Cherlyn Trujillo and
Erin Keen were outstanding in the circle for the University of Mary, each pitching complete games and allowing no earned runs en route to a sweep of Bemidji State. In game one Trujillo had a perfect game going through 19 batters as U-Mary won 7-0. In game two Keen scattered six hits and struck out eight as the Marauders won 2-1.
Julissa Perales was the offensive star for the Marauders (20-16, 10-10 NSIC) Thursday finishing going 4-for-6 with 5 RBI and a home run.
Lyndsey Peterson was the only Beaver (8-35, 2-24) to record multiple hits going 2-for-6 with a run.
After a 1-2-3 first inning for the Marauders, Britney Hadley led off the second with a frozen rope double off the right field fence. Not to be outdone, Perales followed with a two-run opposite field jack to give U-Mary a 2-0 lead.
After forcing a groundout to start the game, Trujillo struck out eight consecutive Beavers' hitters, all eight of which were swinging.
With two outs in the third inning Keen hit her fourth homer of the season and put U-Mary up 3-0. After
Allison Brown doubled and Hadley was hit by a pitch, Perales came up with an RBI double to left field to increase the Marauders lead to four.
U-Mary added two more in the sixth as senior
Jessica Alvarado doubled to center field to score
Alana Norman and
Kimberly McKnight.
Nineteen batters up and nineteen batters town left Trujillo just two outs away from a perfect game. A single to center field spoiled the lefty's bid at perfection, but Trujillo responded with back-to-back strikeouts increasing her total to 14 and ending the game.
Playing error free in the first game, U-Mary got in trouble in the second game with an error in the top of the second that followed a leadoff double and led to a Bemidji State run.
A slow offensive start in the second game left the Marauders scoreless through three innings. Brown opened the fourth with an infield single and stole second base. Two batters later, Perales came up with her fifth RBI of the day on a single to score Brown. After Rodriguez singled, McKnight followed with a run scoring hit to right field.
The Marauders stranded three in the inning, but McKnight's RBI proved to be the game-winner as Keen shut the door on the Beavers to give U-Mary a 2-1 win.
U-Mary will wrap up the regular season this weekend as they take on Augustana and Wayne State with a chance to clinch a playoff berth on the line. Currently the Marauders are tied for the 10th and final spot in the postseason tournament with Northern State.
