Box Score 2 St. Cloud, MN—
Cherlyn Trujillo was dominant in the circle leading the University of Mary to a split against St. Cloud State. In game one U-Mary got down late and was unable to comeback as they fell 2-1. In game two the Marauders rallied late as they held on for a 4-0 victory.
Trujillo got the nod for the Marauders in both games pitching all 13 innings including a complete game shutout in the second game. Picking up her 13th win of the season, the lefty struck out 11 while walking just one.
St. Cloud's Kelly Franks got the decision in both games for the Huskies. Franks pitched a gem in game one allowing just one run and striking out nine. U-Mary roughed up Franks in relief in game two as she allowed four runs in just three innings of work.
Both offenses were stifled early in game one. Through four innings the teams combined for just four hits and nine strikeouts.
In the fifth is when SCSU was able to break the tie. The Huskies led off the inning with a single and followed three batters later with a two-out RBI double to left center. Again in the sixth St. Cloud led off with a single and again with two outs came up with an RBI hit.
Down 2-0 entering the seventh,
Julissa Perales led off with a single to center field.
Demaree Rodriguez followed by reaching an error. Perales and Rodriguez both advanced on a fielder's choice to give U-Mary two runners in scoring position with just one out. With the ensuing batter striking out,
Alana Norman came up with a two-out infield single that scored Rodriguez from third. U-Mary stranded two, however, as the next batter lined out to short to end the game.
The second came also started out slow offensively for both teams. Again through four innings there was no score. This time, however, it was the Marauders turn to break the drought.
With two outs and a runner on second, senior
Jessica Alvarado put the Marauders on the board with an RBI triple to center field that scored
Kristin Ormsby. Alvarado went 3-for-7 on the day and has now hit safely in five consecutive games.
The Marauders took advantage of several Huskies' miscues as they turned a leadoff walk, an error and four hits (three of which were infield hits) into three runs in the sixth inning.
Kimberly McKnight came up with the key hit in the inning as she knocked in the first run of the inning on an infield single to the pitcher.
Trujillo took it from there as she sent down St. Cloud (26-19, 11-7 NSIC) in order the final two innings to complete the shutout.
With the split the Marauders move to 19-16 overall and 8-10 in conference play. U-Mary is next scheduled to play on April 24 as they host Bemidji State in a Northern Sun doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m.
