Softball Swept by Minnesota Duluth

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 St. Cloud, MN—Forced to play indoors due to the weather, the University of Mary was swept Saturday night by Minnesota Duluth at the Husky Dome in St. Cloud. Tied late in the game, U-Mary stumbled as they dropped game one 5-1. The Marauders got up early in game two, but consecutive five run innings by the Bulldogs was too much to overcome as they dropped game two 11-2.

Jessica Alvarado was one of the few bright spots for the Marauders going 3-for-6 on the night and scoring a run.

Minnesota Duluth (33-9, 13-3 NSIC) shortstop Kierra Jeffers keyed the Bulldogs offense going 5-for-7 with a home run and four runs scored.

In game one U-Mary got down early as Cherlyn Trujillo surrendered a home run in the second inning. Trujillo buckled down and retired 13 of the next 14 batters including six strikeouts.

In the fourth Allison Brown led off the inning with a bunt single. Julissa Perales and Demaree Rodriguez drew consecutive one out walks. The next batter, Kimberly McKnight, put the ball in play to score Perales on fielder's choice. With runners at first and second, the Marauders were unable to extend the inning, as they stranded two and ended the inning tied at 1-1.

The tie didn't last for long though, as the Bulldogs put together a string of hits in the bottom of the sixth to score four runs. After a strike out to lead off the inning, UMD drew a walk that was followed with four consecutive hits.

U-Mary went down in order in the top of the seventh as they dropped game one 5-1.

Alvarado led off the second game with a single and advanced to second on a passed ball. Two batters later Brown doubled to right center to score Alvarado. Britney Hadley followed Brown with an RBI double of her own to give the Marauders a 2-0 lead.

Erin Keen got the nod in game two and started with two scoreless innings.

A leadoff walk in the Bulldog's third started a four hit five run rally that gave UMD a 5-1 lead. In the fourth Duluth came right back with another five run inning behind a pair of home runs, as they took a 10-2 lead.

With two outs and runners at the corners in the fifth, Demaree Rodriguez drove in Brown and closed the gap to seven. McKnight followed and was hit by a pitch to load the bases and force UMD to make a pitching change. U-Mary was unable to capitalize, however, as they stranded three.

In the home half of the inning Jeffers led off with a home run to left that that extended their lead to 8 evoking the mercy rule.

U-Mary (18-15, 7-9 NSIC) will be back in action on Sunday at 2 p.m. as they take on St. Cloud State in a doubleheader.
