Warriors Pull Away from Marauders

Box Score Winona, MN – The University of Mary was unable to match the Winona State University offensive output throughout the middle and late innings in an 11-6 Marauders loss to the Warriors in the lone game of the day between the two teams. Early morning rain changed the scheduled doubleheader to a single nine inning game.

The Marauders (14-11-1 overall, 5-6 Northern Sun) took early advantage of a Warriors (13-12, 7-4) miscue, scoring twice when a ground ball by Derek Somerville was thrown away in the bottom of the first inning. The 2-0 lead proved short lived as Winona State scored three times in the second.

U-Mary would tie the game in the third when Jason Shaul singled home Marice Burrough.

Two errors by U-Mary on the same play in the fourth broke the tie, allowing WSU to score twice. Seth McMullen homered in the fifth, scoring the first of two runs for the Warriors in the inning as WSU increased its lead to 7-3.

Refusing to fold, the Marauders pulled within 7-5 on a run scoring single by James Carroll and another Warriors error.

The two teams traded runs in the seventh with Shaul recording his second RBI of the day.

The game was sealed in the ninth when the Warriors scored three unearned runs. Ben Sebesta had the big blow with a 2-run single.

On a sloppy day, U-Mary committed five errors and WSU four.

Cory Herback was 2-for-4 with two runs scored to lead the Marauders offense. Shaul went 2-for-5 with two RBI, Michael Stevenson was 2-for-4 with a run scored and Burrough scored twice.

Sebesta went 3-for-5, driving in three runs and scoring once to pace Winona Stat. McMullen scored twice and had two hits and Cody Strang added three hits, scored three times and drove in one run.

Depending on weather and field conditions, the Marauders are next scheduled to face the University of Sioux Falls on Wednesday, April 24.
