Meyhoff Mows Down Warriors to Earn Marauders a Split

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Winona, MN – A dominating performance by University of Mary southpaw McKeon Meyhoff earned the Marauders baseball team a split against Winona State University. Meyhoff allowed just four hits in his complete game 4-2 win over the Warriors. Winona State captured the opener 4-1.

The four game series with Winona State was originally set for Bismarck, ND, but over 18 inches of snow on Sunday and Monday forced the swapping of sites. Per Northern Sun rules, U-Mary maintained its status as the home team on the scoreboard.

A sophomore from Hazen, ND, Meyhoff allowed just four hits and two runs, both earned, in the nine inning complete game. He tied his career-high with eight strikeouts and walked just three.

Three of the hits and both WSU runs off Meyhoff came in the second inning. Cody Strang homered to lead off the inning and Lucas Warren doubled with one out. Warren later scored on a sacrifice fly. Meyhoff then took over the game, retiring 21 of the next 23 batters he faced. The only two hitters to reach base were walked.

Despite recording a hit in five straight innings, the Marauders were kept off the scoreboard by Warriors starter Chase Blazier for the first six innings. U-Mary finally touched the Winona State hurler in the seventh.

Michael Stevenson led off the bottom of the seventh for U-Mary with a walk. After Stevenson stole second, Sam Ingemansen was hit by a pitch. Alex Deyle followed with a sacrifice bunt to push both runners into scoring position before Mo Burrough earned a walk.

With the bases loaded, Cory Herback came through with the biggest hit of the day for the Marauders, a two-run double to right center to tie the game. U-Mary captured a 3-2 lead on a wild pitch that scored Burrough. Jason Shaul doubled the Marauders advantage with an RBI single to right, driving home Herback.

Meyhoff kept the Warriors in check. He retired the side in the eighth. In the ninth he allowed two runners to reach but kept Winona State from crossing the plate.

Kyal Williams was 3-for-4 at the plate to lead the Marauders 11-hit attack. Shaul and Stevenson both had two hits for U-Mary. Strang recorded two of WSU's four hits.

Williams was strong on the hill for the Marauders in the opener, a 4-1 loss. The senior struck out four hitters in six innings, walked two and allowed eight hits to keep U-Mary in the game.

The Marauders were held at bay by Warriors starting pitcher Mike Wasilik. He allowed just two hits in 6.1 innings, striking out six and walking four.

Winona State scored twice in both the fourth and the sixth innings. Both runs in the fourth came with two outs on run-scoring hits by Lucas Crimmins and Ryan Ledvina.

U-Mary threatened in the bottom of the seventh, loading the bases on a hit and two walks with one out. A fielder's choice on a Burrough grounder brought home Salveson with the only run of the game for U-Mary. Derek Wojcik came on in relief for Winona State and retired the last two hitters of the game for the save.

U-Mary is 14-11-1 overall and 5-5 in the NSIC after the split. Winona State is 12-12 and 6-4. The two teams conclude this four-game set with a doubleheader on Sunday, April 21, at 12 noon.
