Marauders Finish Spring Break on a High Note

U-Mary picked up a pair of wins in the final day of their six-day 10-game spring trip

In U-Mary's ten game spring trip Brown batted .472 with with 14 RBI
Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla.— The University of Mary softball team went out on top, finishing their spring trip with a pair of wins over Georgian Court and Grand Valley State. In the first game of the day U-Mary defeated Georgian Court 9-5 behind a flurry of extra base hits. In the second game the Marauders took advantage of a six run first inning as they cruised to an 11-2 victory.
 
Game 1
 
In game one the Marauders jumped ahead behind a pair of early home runs, before finishing with a 9-5 win. In the first inning Jessica Alvarado reached base on a single. Allison Brown followed with a shot to centerfield to give U-Mary a 2-0 lead.
 
In the third inning Kristin Ormsby led off with a home run to right center forcing a pitching change. Three batters later Brown came up to bat and blasted an RBI double to center to score Alvarado and give the Marauders a 4-0 lead.
 
The Lions put together a rally in the bottom of the third to make it a two run ballgame. Georgian Court took advantage of a Marauders' error to extend the inning, before coming up with a two run double. U-Mary responded in the fourth with two runs of their own to make the score 6-2.
 
Erin Keen pitched out of a bases loaded jam in the bottom of the fourth with a strikeout, and the Marauders added two more in the top of the fifth.
 
U-Mary added a run in the top of the 7th on an RBI single from Norman to go up 9-2 with a half inning left to play. Georgian Court put up a fight in the bottom of the inning loading the bases with one out. Keen was able to get a ground ball out, but at the cost of a run. After a hit batter, Georgian Court singled to left to add two more. With the game-tying run on deck, Keen induced another ground ball out, this time to end the game as the Marauders escaped with a four run victory.
 
Brown and Ormsby each finished the game 3-for-4. Brown had three extra base hits and a season-high four runs batted in. Keen picked up her third win of the season and her fifth complete game.
 
Game 2
 
In their final game of the trip the Marauders offense jumped ahead early and cruised to an 11-2 mercy rule victory over Grand Valley State, who received votes in the latest national poll.
 
Alana Norman started the game with a single and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt from Alvarado.  After Brown drew a walk, Brittney Hadley put the Marauders on the board with a three run homerun to left field to give U-Mary a 3-0 lead. A walk and three singles later and the Marauders had a 4-0 lead with bases loaded and just one out, forcing the Lions to make an early pitching change. U-Mary added two more runs before finally being retired.  The Marauders sent 12 batters to the plate and notched six hits in the inning.
 
Hadley led off the second with a double and was driven in by a Demaree Rodriguez single through the left side. Two batters later Kimberly McKnight singled through the right side to score Rodriguez. With Cherlyn Trujillo retiring the first six Grand Valley batters in order, U-Mary held a commanding 8-0 lead after two.
 
Trujillo continued to roll through the Lions' hitters until there was two outs in the fourth inning. A ball hit down the right field line landed just in front of a diving Keen for the first hit of the day. The very next batter went deep to put Grand Valley on the board and close the gap to 9-2. Trujillo struck out the next batter looking and was perfect the rest of the way putting down the next four Lions' batters in order.
 
Trujillo (7-2) finished the game with four strikeouts and no walks, while allowing just two hits.
 
Hadley, Rodriguez and McKnight each finished with two hits for the Marauders. Hadley scored two runs and finished with a game-high four runs batted in.
 
U-Mary drew a season-high 10 walks to go with 10 hits.
 
Up Next
 
With a sweep today, U-Mary improves to 11-6 on the season and finishes their spring trip with a record of 6-4. The Marauders will be off next week, and will resume play on Mar. 20th as they host Sioux Falls to start Northern Sun play.
