Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla.— With a day off on Wednesday, the University of Mary (9-6) was back in action today as they opened the day with a 9-0 mercy rule win over Concordia (NY), but stumbled in game two as they fell 1-0 to Fort Hays State. U-Mary's offense exploded for nine runs on 13 hits in game one, but was held to just two and no runs in the final game of the day.
Game 1
The Marauders took advantage of a dominant performance from
Cherlyn Trujillo as they cruised to a 9-0 victory. Trujillo pitched possibly the best game of her U-Mary career allowing just one hit and striking out eight.
Through four innings Trujillo had faced the minimum 12 batters, and a perfect game was well within reach as the mercy rule was set to be in effect. However, Concordia's fourth batter led off the fifth inning with a bunt single to break-up the perfect game.
Despite two hits and several well-truck balls, the Marauders were not able to get on the board until the third inning, In the third, U-Mary put together a four run, two out rally to take the lead.
Erin Keen reached on a fielders choice and was followed by back-to-back singles from
Alana Norman and
Jessica Alvarado to load the bases.
Allison Brown came up to bat with bases loaded for the second time in as many games. Brown delivered with a single to left. Brown's single was misplayed by the Clippers' outfielder allowing three runs to score.
Brittney Hadley followed with a double through the left side to score Brown.
U-Mary put up another crooked number in the fifth taking advantage of two Concordia errors to score five runs, all of which were unearned.
Kristin Ormsby started the rally with a one out double. Five different Marauders recorded hits in the inning, including Hadley connecting on her second double in as many innings.
Norman was perfect going 4-for-4 in the game. The freshman infielder also scored two runs.
Game 2
After an offensive outburst in game one, game two proved to be a pitchers duel. Although Keen finished with just one strikeout, she was able to produce a season-high 14 groundball outs, while allowing a season-low four hits.
Through two innings neither team was able to produce a hit. In the third the Tigers threatened with back-to-back two out singles, but Keen was able to produce an out to end the scare. Alvarado came up with the first U-Mary hit in the bottom of the inning, but the Marauders were unable to make anything out of it.
After Keen shutdown the Concordia bats in the top of the fourth, Hadley led off the home half of the inning with a single. Again the Marauders were unable to make anything of it.
In the fifth inning Concordia played small ball to manufacture the games only run. The Tigers' ninth batter Kellsi Olsen led off with a bunt single. The leadoff batter advanced Olsen to second on a sacrifice bunt. The following batter grounded out to Norman at second, but Olsen was able to advance to third on the play. With two outs and Olsen on third, Concordia's clean up hitter drove the ball up the middle for an RBI single.
The Tigers' Maddie Holub took over from there striking out five of the final nine Marauders she face en route to a twelve strikeout, two hit shutout.
