Stellar Pitching and Clutch Hitting Leads to U-Mary Sweep

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Clermont, Fla.— Behind stellar pitching and clutch hitting, the University of Mary softball team finished day three of their spring trip with a pair o wins. U-Mary started the day off with a 9-0 win over Lynn University (14-8) and completed the sweep with a 6-4 win over Wilmington University (8-7).
 
In game one Cherlyn Trujillo was dominant finishing with 10 strikeouts in a complete game shutout. Trujillo scattered five hits and had zero walks. In game two Erin Keen pitched a complete game and finished with a season-high 10 strikeouts.
 
The Marauders pounded out 28 hits on the day to score 15 runs. U-Mary hit .421 with runners on base and .370 with runners in scoring position.
 
Allison Brown stole the stole the show offensively going 6-for-9 while driving in six runs. Four of Brown's six runs batted in came in the fourth inning of the second game as she hit a bases loaded home run over the left field fence.
 
Game 1
 
In the first game of the day the Marauders scored early and often en route to a 9-0 win. U-Mary scored runs in five of seven innings.
 
Brown started the scoring off for U-Mary in the first with an RBI double to left field that scored Jessica Alvarado. In the third Brown came through again with an RBI, this time on a single to right that scored Alana Norman. The Marauders scored another run in the inning as Demaree Rodriguez drove in Brown to give U-Mary a 3-0 lead.
 
The Marauders scored three more in the top of the fifth by taking advantage of a Lynn error. A two run double off the bat of Keen keyed the rally.
 
In the bottom of the inning the Fighting Knights put forth their biggest threat of the game as the put a runner in scoring position with one out. Trujillo struck out the next batter, before surrendering a single to the following batter. With runners at the corners Trujillo picked up her eighth strike out of the day to end the inning and Lynn's scoring hopes.
 
As a team the Marauders outhit the Fighting Knights 15-5. Brown, Norman and Rodriguez each finished the game with three hits.
 
Game 2
 
U-Mary got down early in the second game, but a four run fourth inning capped off with a grand slam off the bat of Brown allowed the Marauders to come from behind for a 6-4 win.
 
In the first inning the Marauders got in a jam after the first three batters of the game reached base off of an infield single, an error and a walk. A bases clearing triple gave Wilmington a 3-0 lead. Keen pitched U-Mary out of the jam with back-to-back strikeouts and was lights out the rest of the way.
 
After the first inning Keen allowed just one run and added eight more strikeouts.
 
U-Mary got two runs back in the third sparked by a pair of leadoff singles by Alvarado and Brown. Three batters later Rodriguez hit a single to right field to score Brown and Brittney Hadley and make it a one run game.
 
Back-to-back-to-back singles to start the fourth inning set up Brown with bases loaded and nobody out. Brown rose to the challenge blasting a home run over the left field fence to give the Marauders a 6-4 lead. With Keen cruising along, the Brown's home run proved to be the difference as U-Mary held on for the win.
 
U-Mary had 13 hits to Wilmington's seven. For the first time this season the Marauders' offense finished with no strikeouts. Alvarado and Brown each finished with three hits. Norman and Keen each added two.
 
Up Next
 
U-Mary (8-5) will be off on Wednesday, and will be back in action on Thursday for a pair of games against Concordia College (N.Y.) and Fort Hays State.
