Shane Trattles pitched a no-hitter to propel the University of Mary to a doubleheader sweep of Penn State Beaver. The Marauders opened the day with a 6-3 win before Trattles stole the show in a 2-0 victory to close out the pair of wins.
A transfer from Ridgewater (MN) Community College, Trattles improves to 2-1 on the season. The junior pitched the Marauders first no-hitter since Michael Allen in a 15-0 home win over the University of Minnesota, Crookston on April 21, 2007.
Roger Wuertz tossed the only other no-hitter in school history against Graceland (IA) College in 1998.
The Marauder scored the first run of the game courtesy of two Beaver errors in the fourth inning. U-Mary scored an insurance run in the seventh. A Derek Sommerville double and a singe by
Scott Held placed runners on the corner before a squeeze bunt by
Sam Ingemansen plated the second run.
In the day's opener,
Michael Vollrath earned his first win of the season. The sophomore lefty pitched into the sixth inning before he was relieved with a 2-0 lead. He struck out five in the outing. With a Beaver runner in scoring position,
Travis Famias recorded a strike out to end the inning and preserve the two run lead.
U-Mary struck early for the first run of the day.
Jason Shaul ripped a two out triple over the right fielder and soon scored on a Sommerville single. The Marauders waited until the fourth inning to score again. After singles by Shaul and
James Carroll, Shaul would score during a rundown on another U-Mary runner.
The Marauders exploded for four runs in the sixth to seal the win. A passed ball and a run scoring single by
Alex Deyle contributed the first two runs before another Shaul triple scored the final two runs of the game for U-Mary.
U-Mary improves to 7-2-1 with the win. Beaver is 0-2.
After taking tomorrow off the Marauders return to the field against Penn State Brandywine and Penn State Fayette on March 6.
