Rusty Marauders Swept by Comets

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Winner, SD – Unable to shake off the rust from a 22-day layoff, the University of Mary baseball team was swept by Mayville State University in a non-conference doubleheader, 11-0 and 2-1. In contests between two in-state foes that were played out of state, the Marauders were held hitless in the opener and limited to five knocks in game two.
 
A late addition to the schedule, the Marauders (9-4-1 overall) and the Comets (13-1-1) are former North Dakota College Athletic Conference and DAC-10 foes. Additionally U-Mary Head Coach Joel Barta is a Mayville State alumnus and played for Comets Head Coach Scott Berry.
 
After extending his scoreless streak to 19 straight innings, Jeff Skadeland was touched for three runs in the second inning of the opener after giving up three hits, hitting three batters and walking one. The senior allowed one more run in the third. In three innings he gave up four earned runs on five hits, five walks and three hit batters with three strikeouts in his first loss of the year after three wins.
 
Fresh off a no-hitter in his last appearance, Shane Trattles was touched for five runs in the fourth inning and two more in the seventh.
 
Effectively wild, Todd Leavitt allowed six walks in pitching a no-hitter for the Comets. He struck out six and allowed only one runner as far as third base in picking up his first win of the season.
 
Duelle Higbe had three hits, scored twice and drove in two runs for the Comets. Johnny Pistulka also had three hits, scored three times and knocked in three runs.
 
The Marauders opened the second game with three hits and a run in the top of the first inning. A base hit by senior James Carroll scored Cory Herback for an early 1-0 lead. Herback finished the game with two of U-Mary's five hits.
 
The Comets scored their two runs in the third, A run-scoring single by Bryan Jacklitch tied the game. Following an error by the Marauders to keep the inning alive, Dillon Lundin doubled home Jacklitch for the winning run with two outs.
 
The Marauders had base runners reach second in the fifth and the seventh but the squad was unable to find a key hit to tie the game.
 
Kyal Williams kept Mayville State in check throughout the game. The senior righty from Adelaide, South Australia, threw his second complete game of the season. He allowed six hits and two walks in six innings with four strikeouts.
 
Kurtis McCallum earned the win for MSU, striking out four and allowing one run in four innings. Aaron Dick pitched three scoreless innings for a save.
 
The Marauders will face another former NDCAC and DAC-10 foe on Monday, April 2, when U-Mary travels west to face Dickinson State University.
