Box Score 2 Las Vegas – The University of Mary opened the season with a pair of wins at the Montana State University Desert Stinger tournament. The Marauders started the day with a 6-1 victory over Academy of Art and finished with a 10-7 win over Sonoma State.
Game 1
An error by U-Mary in the first inning actually allowed Academy of Arts to take an early lead, but that was the only blemish on an otherwise dominant performance by the Marauders. Making her first career start for the Marauders,
Cherlyn Trujillo pitched a complete game shut-out and allowed just two hits in the game.
Demaree Rodriguez started out the scoring for U-Mary with a two run homerun in the bottom of the second to give the Marauders a 2-1 lead. U-Mary scored again in the third on a single by
Allison Brown that brought
Jessica Alvarado around to score.
Britney Hadley hit a solo homerun in the 4th and
Julissa Perales hit a two run bomb in the 5th to give the Marauders a 6-1 lead. Trujillo closed the door as the Marauders won 6-1.
U-Mary finished with seven hits and five different players recorded a hit. Hadley and Rodriguez each had two hits for the Marauders.
Game 2
U-Mary got down 2-0, but answered with a three run homer off the bat of
Taylor Mendez in the third inning. Hadley homered in the fourth and the Marauders went up 4-2.
U-Mary surrendered three runs in the fourth as Sonoma State retook the lead at 5-4. Ormsby homered in the 5th to tie the game, but SSU answered back in the bottom of the inning.
The Marauders rattled off four runs in the 6th inning and held on to win 10-7.
Named one of U-Mary's Northern Sun Players to Watch,
Erin Keen got the win for U-Mary pitching a complete game and recording five strikeouts.
U-Mary outhit Sonoma State 14-12. Ormsby was a perfect 3-3 on the game and finished with three runs batted in. Alvarado, Brown, Mendez and Rodriguez each had two hits.
The Marauders (2-0) will be back in action tomorrow against Central Washington and Minnesota Duluth.
