Rally Stuns Marauders in Draw, Loss with UND

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Minneapolis – A promising lead quickly evaporated for the University of Mary as the Marauders left the Metrodome with a loss and a draw against the University of North Dakota. The Marauders lost a four run lead in the final inning of the day in a game ending in a 7-7 tie due to a time limit at the Metrodome. North Dakota won the doubleheader opener 11-2.

This was the first time U-Mary has faced NCAA Division I North Dakota since the two teams split a double header in Grand Forks, ND, in 2009.

Trailing by two, the Marauders used a two out rally in the fourth inning to even the second game of the day. A bunt single by Michael Stevenson gave the Marauders their first hit of the game. After a walk and a wild pitch, Stevenson scored on an infield hit by Sam Ingemansen before a passed ball tied the game.

U-Mary took advantage of a touch of wildness by UND relief pitcher Tyler Ruemmele. The Marauders used three walks and two hits to score four times. A bases loaded walk to James Carroll forced home the first run before a safety squeeze by Stevenson scored the second. Derek Sommerville then blasted a long double to left field to drive home the final two runs.

After allowing two runs in the second, Kyal Williams settled into a groove for the Marauders, facing just ten hitters from the third inning through the fifth. UND would force Williams from the game in the sixth after using a double and a single to pull within 6-3. McKeon Meyhoff replaced Williams and induced back to back ground ball outs to shut down the North Dakota rally.

The Marauders tacked on another run in the seventh on a Stevenson single to carry a 7-3 lead into the bottom of seven.

North Dakota would explode for four runs in the seventh to tie the game. After consecutive singles to start the inning, Kris Kwak cracked a three-run home run over the right field wall. After a pop out, Jeff Campbell doubled to right field.

Zach Trygstad then greeted new U-Mary pitcher Travis Famias with a game tying single to center field. After a walk, Famias retired the last two hitters to keep the game even.

Stevenson led the Marauders offense by posting two of the team's six hits. The senior left fielder drove in two runs and scored one. Sommerville also had two RBIs.

Williams had another solid start for the Marauders. He allowed three runs on six hits and a walk in 5.1 innings. The senior struck out six in his second start of the season.

Trygstad led the UND attack with three hits and one RBI.

The Marauders started off the day on a positive note, scoring twice in the opening inning in game one. With two outs Stevenson singled through the left side to score one run and Sommerville knocked a ball up the middle for a second.
North Dakota halved the deficit in the bottom of the first and gained the lead with a three run second. UND, which scored in every inning, posted two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth to pull away from U-Mary.

Seven different Marauders posted one hit in the game. Trygstad led the UND attack with three hits and three RBI. Sam Alt also had three hits for North Dakota.

The Marauders are now 3-2-1 on the season. UND improves to 5-2.
