Box Score Moorhead, MN – Despite a career-high 21 points from
Jalen Jaspers and freshman
Kevin Jensen just missing a double double, the University of Mary couldn't contain a high-powered Minnesota State University Moorhead squad. The Dragons burned past the Marauders 92-77 in the final regular season weekend of Northern Sun play.
Jaspers drove hard to the basket all night and hit 9-of-14 shots on his way to 21 points. The junior guard also led the Marauders with six assists. His previous career best total was 19 points, which he accomplished twice.
A fixture in the starting lineup since the season-ending injury to
Alex Dorr, Jensen scored 12 points and hauled down a team-high nine rebounds. He scored his points on four three-point shots, all coming in the first half.
Josh Turner reached double figures for the seventh straight game, scoring 18 points. The NSIC leader in three pointers made per game hit four treys in the game to exceed his average. The U-Mary senior guard also had five rebounds and three assists.
Mark Musungayi added eight points and eight rebounds.
Brandon Tyler came off the bench to score eight points.
The two teams combined to shoot 58 treys, making 25. The Marauders (4-21, overall, 3-18 NSIC) finished 12-of-35 behind the arc and the Dragons (17-10, 11-10) connected on 13-of-23.
The big difference in the game between the two teams came at the free throw line. MSUM finished 19-of-22 while U-Mary was 5-of-8.
The Dragons, who snapped a three-game losing streak, led by as many as nine points in the first half before the Marauders whittled the deficit to two on a Jaspers layup. A three-ball late in the session by Tyler Vaughn let the Dragons enter intermission up 39-34.
Down 11 in the second half, Tyler scored the first eight Marauders points in a 10-2 run to pull U-Mary within 54-51. The freshman guard hit a three pointer, made two of three free throws after he was fouled on a shot beyond the arc and converted a three point play.
The Dragons immediately regained control using a 13-2 run keyed by two treys and a jumper from Anthony Tucker. MSUM maintained a double digit lead much of the rest of the night with U-Mary getting no closer than eight points.
A two-time NSIC player of the week, Tucker scored 23 points, dished ten assists and hauled down eight rebounds Vaughn had 21 points and Alex Novak posted 16 points, 12 rebounds and three blocks.
The Marauders close out the regular season at Northern State University on February 23 at 7 PM.
