Box Score 1 |
Box Score 2 West St. Paul, Minn.— Going into the day with a perfect 5-0 record and averaging over nine runs per game, the University of Mary's offense sputtered as they dropped both games of a doubleheader to Minnesota Duluth (8-4). Despite both teams averaging over seven runs per game, the two teams combined for seven runs in two games.
The Marauders dropped game one to Bulldogs 1-0 on a walk-off homerun by Ashley Schilling. In game two, U-Mary was doomed by a four run fourth inning from Minnesota Duluth as they fell 4-2.
Game 1
The opening game of the day proved to be a pitching duel as the two pitchers combined to allow four hits and just six base runners.
Erin Keen was stellar on the mound for the Marauders pitching a complete game while striking out four and scattering four hits. Unfortunately for U-Mary, Julia Nealer was even more spectacular as she no-hit the Marauders while striking out five.
Minnesota Duluth threatened to score in the first inning after a lead-off walk, a sacrifice and a walk gave them a runner on third with one out. Keen pitched out of the jam producing back-to-back ground ball outs. The Bulldogs threatened again in the bottom of the sixth as two of the first four batters reached base on balls and the fifth batter singled to load the bases. Again Keen pitched out of a jam producing a pop out to end the inning.
Despite U-Mary's defense holding UMD scoreless through six innings, the offense was never able to get anything going as only two Marauders scoring position, both of which reached base on errors.
With one out in the bottom of the seventh and the score tied at zero, it looked as though the Marauders were headed to extras. Schilling and the Bulldogs had another idea as the right fielder blasted a home run over the left center wall for a walk-off 1-0 win.
Game 2
Through three scoreless innings the second game appeared to be shaping up much as the first one did. With just one hit entering the inning, Minnesota Duluth exploded in the fourth scoring four runs on six hits including a two-run home run. U-Mary started the home half of the inning with back-to-back outs before
Kristin Ormsby singled. Following Ormsby,
Julissa Perales put the Marauders on the board with two-run home run to make the score 4-2.
Cherlyn Trujillo was able to shut down the Bulldogs the rest of the game, but the Marauders were unable to muster another hit. Despite pitching a complete game and striking out 12, Trujillo was saddled with her first loss of the season.
Up Next
With the losses U-Mary falls to 5-2 on the season. The Marauders will be back in action next on March 3 as they begin a six-day stretch in Florida where they will play 10 games.
