Box Score 2 Minneapolis – The Down Under duo of
Kyal Williams and
Christopher Jolly combined for a shutout to lead the University of Mary to a doubleheader split with Southwest Minnesota State University. After dropping the opener 7-3 the Marauders rebounded to capture the second game 4-0 at the Northern Sun Baseball Metrodome Classic.
Williams, from Adelaide, South Australia, hurled six shutout innings, allowing just three hits and one walk while striking out six to win his first start of the season. He retired 10 of the last 11 batters he faced. Only twice did a runner advance into scoring position.
A native of Sydney, Australia, Jolly pitched a scoreless seventh inning to conclude the win. He allowed just one walk in the inning.
The first four U-Mary hitters all singled in the top of the first inning, leading to a three run outburst to provide Williams and Jolly more than enough runs. Mo Burrough singled to open the game and gained third base on an SMSU throwing error. An RBI single by
Cory Herback scored Burrough to open the scoring.
After a
Jason Shaul single,
James Carroll knocked home Herback with the second run. Following a fielder's choice for the first out of the inning, a Derek Sommerville base hit drove home Carroll.
The Marauders would improve their lead to 4-0 in the second. With two outs Burrough walked stole second, and scored on a base hit by Herback.
Herback finished the game 3-for-4 with a run scored and two RBI. Burrough scored two runs. Sommerville finished 2-for-2 with a walk and an RBI.
The Marauders struggled in an opening game that started at 6 AM, managing just three hits while committing two errors.
The Mustangs opened the scoring in the second inning on a Jason Carlson single. SMSU exploded for five runs in the third, highlighted by two-run doubles by Brian Ness and Carlson.
U-Mary closed to within 6-2 with single runs in the third and the fifth. Both teams scored one apiece in the sixth.
Austin Grunstad was 2-for-3 with a double. The junior second baseman scored a run and drove in one. Burrough scored once and stole two bases.
Sam Salveson pitched 1.2 perfect innings to close the game out for U-Mary.
Carlson paced SMSU with two hits and three RBI. Travis McLaughlin earned the win after allowing one hit and two runs in four innings. He walked five and struck out four.
The Marauders improve to 3-1 on the season. The Mustangs are 2-2.
The Marauders return to action against the University of North Dakota on February 27 at the Metrodome.
