Box Score Bismarck, ND – One night after the University of Mary posted its best shooting numbers of the year the Marauders struggled from the floor in a 63-56 Northern Sun loss to Bemidji State University.
U-Mary blistered the nets in a 77-63 win over the University of Minnesota, Crookston on Friday, shooting a season-high 59.8 per cent from the floor. One day later the story was reversed against the Beavers (13-11 overall, 11-9 NSIC) as the Marauders (4-20, 3-17) connected on just 34.4 per cent of its shots, the fourth worst effort of the season.
One of the top three point shooting teams in the Northern Sun, U-Mary shot only 25.6 per cent behind the arc against BSU, making ten of a season-high 39 attempts.
Bemidji State also struggled from the field, shooting 34 per cent overall and 24.1.per cent on three pointers.
What separated the Beavers was the free throw line as BSU made 22-of-27 foul shots. While U-Mary was perfect at the line the Marauders had just a paltry four attempts.
Behind a layup and a three ball from freshman
Kevin Jensen, the Marauders jumped out to a 5-0 lead on Senior Night. An 11-0 run by the Beavers followed and Bemidji State never trailed the rest of the game.
Trailing by as many as 16 points in the second half, a three pointer by Jensen capped a 21-7 run to pull the Marauders within 46-42 with just over eight minutes on the clock.
The Beavers held off the Marauders efforts to complete the rally by converting at the free throw line, connecting on 13-of-16 attempts in the seven minutes of play.
Jensen led the Marauders with 17 points, making five treys in 11 attempts. The freshman forward also had four rebounds.
Josh Turner, who is one of two U-Mary seniors along with
Alex Dorr, scored 16 points, all after intermission. In his previous five games Turner was 30-of-46 on three points attempts but tonight struggled to a 4-of-14 effort. He did add seven rebounds and two assists.
Dorr, who suffered a broken finger just over two weeks ago, was given one final start before the home crowd and was removed from the game at the first whistle.
Marc Musungayi added ten points, as did
Blake Maslonkowski. Musungayi also had nine rebounds and made all four U-Mary free throws. Maslonkowski was 5-of-6 from the floor with five rebounds.
Mike Johnson distributed seven assists but finished 0-for-9 shooting the ball, including 0-for-8 behind the arc. Jalen Japsers also had nine rebounds and three assists but was 1-for-8 from the floor.
Maxie Rosenbloom led BSU with 12 points. Lance Rongstad and Dermaine Crockrell each added 11 points and Mason Walter had nine points and ten rebounds.
The Marauders conclude the regular season next weekend at MSU Moorhead and Northern State on February 22-23.
