Brooms Come Out on Opening Day as Marauders Sweep Golden Eagles

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Minneapolis – Combining strong pitching, timely hitting and clean defense, the University of Mary baseball team opened the 2013 season with a sweep of the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Marauders captured the opener 8-1 and ended the day with a 13-4 win over the Golden Eagles. The doubleheader is part of the Northern Sun Metrodome Baseball Classic.
 
The Marauders combined to walk just four hitters and commit one error in the non-conference sweep. U-Mary also pounded out 22 hits in the two games.
 
GAME 1: U-Mary 8 UMC 1
A double steal and a two-out single in the first inning of game one gave the Marauders the positive start they were searching for. With two outs Cory Herback and James Carroll swiped second and third, respectively. Michael Stevenson followed with a single to left to score both runners.
 
After UMC scored in the top of two, Austin Grunstad tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Alex Deyle. A two-out two-run double by Sam Ingemansen in the third highlighted a three-run outburst and U-Mary led 6-1.
 
The Marauders again struck with two outs in the sixth when Mo Burrough and Herback hit run-scoring singles to left field to cap the game's scoring.
 
Shane Trattles earned the win for the Marauders in his first start for U-Mary. The junior transfer from Ridgewater Community College scattered seven hits and didn't walk a batter in a seven-inning complete game. He struck out three and didn't walk a batter. 
 
GAME 2: U-Mary 13 UMC 4
The Marauders offense dominated the second game, scoring in six of seven innings and pounding out 16 hits. Deyle paced the offense with a career-high four hits, including two doubles.
 
Tied 1-1 after one, U-Mary exploded for four runs in the second.  Deyle doubled home two runs and Burrough followed with an RBI double. Herback closed the scoring with a sacrifice fly.
 
UMC struck for two in the bottom of the second to close within 5-3 but the Marauders responded with eight straight runs. After scoring once in the third, U-Mary scored three times in the fourth and twice in the fifth and the sixth innings.
 
Deyle had four hits, scored twice and drove in a run. Kyal Williams posted three hits, including a double, scored twice and drove in a run.
 
Three other Marauders had two hits. Stevenson scored twice and had one RBI. Derek Sommerville score once and drove in two. Grunstad scored twice and drove in two.
 
Burrough drove in three runs and Herback added two RBI in the nightcap.
 
Matt Korte and Brooks Miller each had two hits for the Golden Eagles, which totaled eight hits in the game.
 
Jeff Skadeland picked up his first career win in the victory, pitching five innings. The senior from Williston, ND, allowed five hits and three runs, walking three and striking out two.
 
Mason Schiff closed the game for the Marauders, allowing one run on three hits over two innings.
 
The Marauders (2-0 overall) close out the NSIC Metrodome Classic with two games against Southwest Minnesota State University on Sunday, February 17, starting at 6 AM.
