Box Score Bismarck, ND – A barrage of three-pointers by
Josh Turner and
Brandon Tyler in the first half and clutch baskets by
Jalen Jaspers down the stretch lifted the University of Mary to a 77-63 win over the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The victory snaps a 13-game losing streak for the Marauders while the Golden Eagles have now lost 20 straight games.
The Marauders (4-19 overall, 3-16 NSIC) drained sank 12 three-pointers in 19 attempts in the opening stanza. Turner, who was 24-of-36 on three pointers over his last four games, continued his impressive shooting with a 6-of-9 effort from behind the arc in the first half. Tyler was 4-of-7 and
Mike Johnson drained both his three point attempts.
Turner scored 15 straight points for U-Mary on five treys to lead the Marauders to an early 17-10 lead. A triple by Tyler pushed U-Mary to a 20-10 lead.
U-Mary closed the first half on a 14-4 run, keyed by a trio of three-pointers by Tyler. Turner capped the run with his sixth three ball of the half in the waning seconds and the Marauders entered intermission with a 46-27 lead.
Early in the second half the Marauders pushed their advantage to 21 points but the Golden Eagles (3-20, 0-19) refused to fade. A 19-6 run by UMC closed the gap to eight points with 5:25 remaining before Jaspers regained control.
Protecting a 65-57 lead, the Marauders junior guard scored U-Mary's next ten points to preserve the win. After draining a three with 4:06 left, Jaspers drove baseline for a layup on the Marauders next possession. Following a U-Mary turnover, Jaspers connected for a three point play and added another layup to push the Marauders advantage to 75-61, sealing the game with 1:34 remaining.
The Marauders shot a season-high 59.2 per cent from the field for the game, including a 14-of-27 effort behind the arc. The Golden Eagles shot just 43.8 per cent.
Turner led the Marauders with 20 points, 18 coming in the first half. He also added a game-high nine rebounds. The Aurora, CO, native finished 6-of-10 on three-pointers. It was his third straight game with at least 20 points.
Tyler added 17 points, making 5-of-10 behind the arc and adding two assists. Jaspers scored 12 of his 16 points in the second half. He was 7-of-11 from the field and added five assists.
Marc Musungayi was the fourth U-Mary player in double figures. The junior post was 6-of-7 from the floor and scored 12 points. He also had two blocks. Johnson chipped in six points and had six assists and three steals.
Blake Maslonkowski made all three of his field goal attempts and scored six points.
Ashton Harrell led the Golden Eagles with 16 points. Tim Lubke hit four treys and added 14.
The Marauders conclude their final home weekend of the season when they host Bemidji State University on Saturday, February 16, at 6 PM.
