Box Score Bismarck, ND – Forced to play catch-up for a second straight night, the University of Mary was unable to overcome an early deficit in a 68-51 loss to St. Cloud State University.
The Huskies (15-3 overall, 11-3 NSIC), tied for the Northern Sun North Division lead and receiving votes in the national poll, exploded to an 18-2 lead.
The Marauders (3-15, 2-12) responded to the deficit with a 10-5 run.
Kevin Jensen closed the Marauders scoring spurt with five straight points as U-Mary closed the gap to 23-12. The 11 point deficit was the closest the Marauders would be the rest of the evening.
The Huskies would grow their lead to as many as 25 points in the second half.
Jensen was one of two Marauders in double figures. The freshman came off the bench to score ten points, draining two treys on the night and grabbing three rebounds.
Marc Musungayi led U-Mary in scoring for the second straight night. The junior forward posted 12 points and five rebounds. The leading rebounder in the NSIC,
Alex Dorr led the Marauders with eight rebounds and two blocks.
Mike Johnson hit two treys, scored eight points and snared six rebounds.
Theo Rothstein led SCSU with 20 points. Shaun Jensen had 18 points, six rebounds and five assists. Conner Niehaus led all players with 11 rebounds.
Both teams shot 37 per cent for the game but SCSU finished 17-of-20 at the free throw line and U-Mary was 8-of-9. U-Mary turned the ball over 21 times to 10 for SCSU.
This was the first time St. Cloud State has won at the McDowell Activity Center. The Marauders had won the first four games at the MAC, dating back to 2007.
Now in the midst of a nine-game losing streak, the Marauders continue a four-game home stand against NSIC-leading Minnesota State University on Friday, February 1.
