Big Day for Deyle but Marauders Can't Keep Pace with Vikings

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Sioux Falls, SD – Alex Deyle recorded five hits, stole two bases and was flawless in the field at shortstop for the University of Mary but the Marauders were unable to overcome big innings in each game by Augustana. The Vikings captured the opening game of the Northern Sun baseball doubleheader 6-4 and took the second contest 9-3.

A sophomore from Bismarck, ND, Deyle was 2-for-3 in the opener and scored two runs. He was 3-for-4 in the nightcap. Deyle also had a steal in each game. Defensively he had four putouts and three assists in the two contests combined.

The Marauders fell behind in the opener 2-0 as the Vikings scored single runs in each of the first two innings but Augie miscues in the fifth allowed U-Mary to pull even.

With one down, Deyle singled and stole second and Sam Ingemansen walked. On a bunt attempt by Jeff Aders, the Augie pitcher committed an error to allow Deyle to score from second and an error by the Vikings first baseman advanced Ingemansen to third. A Tyler Steffan sacrifice bunt then scored Ingemansen to tie the game.

Augustana posted its first crooked number of the day in the bottom of the fifth, scoring three times as six straight batters reached base – four on singles and two on walks. A passed ball with the bases loaded scored the go-ahead run and pinch-hitter Brendan Koistinen and pitcher Derek Hansen added run-scoring singles. The Vikings increased their lead to 6-2 with another run in the sixth.

The Marauders cut the deficit in half in the seventh and place the tying run on second but U-Mary was unable to come up with a game-tying hit. Deyle singled with one out to start the rally and scored on an error. With the bases loaded following infield singles by Steffan and Marice Burrough, a passed ball allowed Steffan to come home and put the tying run into scoring position. A fly ball to center would end the game.

Steffan had two hits, scored a run and drove in a run for U-Mary. Brendan Phillips and Marcus O'Neil both had two hits for Augie and Nate Hewes scored twice. Koistinen drove in two runs.

Kyle Lozensky pitched five innings for U-Mary, striking out five and allowing eight hits, two walks and five runs.

Hanson earned the win for the Vikings, striking out nine in five innings. He allowed one earned run and three hits.

After committing five errors in the opening game, additional Augie miscues in game two provided the Marauders an early 2-0 lead. Cory Herback scored on a ground out by Steve Pletan in the first inning and Burrough scored off a double steal attempt in the second.

Eleven batters came to the plate in the second inning for the Vikings and Augie crossed home six times on seven singles, a walk and a hit batter. O'Neil's two-run single proved the biggest blow.

Herback tripled and scored on a Derek Sommerville groundout in the third and the Marauders pulled to 6-3.

Augie doubled its lead with three more runs in the third, keyed by an RBI triple from O'Neil. The Vikings also scored on a balk and a wild pitch as their lead increased to 9-3. Neither team would score the rest of the day.

Herback score twice for U-Mary in the game.

Michael Vollrath was tremendous in relief for the Marauders, throwing 5.1 innings of scoreless ball. He gave up just two hits and struck out three.

O'Neil paced the Vikings efforts with two hits, three RBI and two runs scored. Six pitchers worked the game for Augie, combining for eight strikeouts while holding the Marauders to seven hits.

The Marauders close out the regular season at the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday and Sunday, May 5-6.
