High Winds Blow #16 Mavericks Past Marauders

BOX SCORE GAME 1  /  BOX SCORE GAME 2

Bismarck, ND – Already forced to contend with a nationally ranked baseball program, the University of Mary also had to deal with steady 27 miles per hour wind with gusts up to 49 mph. While the Marauders were able to handle the high winds, U-Mary couldn't contain the visiting 16th-ranked Minnesota State University. The Mavericks won both ends of the Northern Sun doubleheader, 6-2 and 15-4, and swept the four-game series.

Fresh off two strong starts, Marauders hurler Jeff Skadeland plunked the first two Mavericks hitters of the day. A wild pitch and a ground ball later, Minnesota State scored a lone run without a hit. In the second, Conner McCallum lined a two-run home run over the right field fence to increase the MSU lead to 3-0.

Skadeland, who had allowed just one earned run in his last two starts covering 13 innings, settled down and kept the Mavericks off the scoreboard in the next two innings. Minnesota State would double its lead in the fifth, scoring three unearned runs on two U-Mary errors and four Mavericks hits.

The Marauders scored single runs in the fifth and sixth but couldn't catch the Mavericks.

Skadeland allowed three earned runs, eight hits and two walks while striking out three in six innings.

Tyler Steffan posted two of the Marauders five hits. He had a steal and also scored a run.

The ninth place hitter for the Mavericks, McCallum had two hits, scored twice and drove in two.

Nick Sutherland gave up just three hits, one walk and an unearned run in five innings for MSU to earn the win.

The Marauders pounded out 10 hits in the second game but U-Mary couldn't keep pace with the Mavericks. Minnesota State registered 15 runs on 18 hits and scored in five of seven innings.

Hitting leadoff triples in each of the first two innings, MSU scored twice in the first and once in the second before scoring three times in the third.

Alex Deyle tripled for the Marauders and scored on a two-out single by Duane Kiyota, Jr., in the third to pull within 6-1. After a scoreless fourth, the Mavericks put the game away with six runs in the fifth inning and tacked on three in the sixth.

Kiyota led the Marauders with three hits, including a triple, scored a run and drove in a run. Deyle had two hits. Steffan had a hit, scored once and drove in a run.

McCallum continued to pace the MSU attack, driving in four runs, scoring twice and recording two hits. Ben Kinkaid, Nolan Johnson and Jeremy Sudbeck all had three hits.

Jason Hoppe earned the win for MSU, striking out ten in six innings.

U-Mary next plays at the University of Minnesota Crookston on April 11,
