Moorhead, MN – Exploding for the University of Mary softball's biggest offensive output since beginning NCAA play in 2006, the Marauders crossed the plate 30 times to sweep a doubleheader at MSU Moorhead. U-Mary opened the day with a 10-2 win behind three triples from
Melissa Gonzalez. The Marauders overcome a nine-run deficit in the night cap to claim a 20-15 victory as Sami Antolin pounded out four hits and drove in five runs.
The 20 runs is the most U-Mary has scored in a single game since beginning NCAA play in 2006. The previous high was 19 against New Mexico Highlands on February 11, 2011.
The 30 runs in a doubleheader is also a new benchmark. U-Mary posted 28 runs in sweeping the University of Minnesota Crookston 13-1 and 15-0 on April 16, 2007.
Gonzalez and Antolin both piled up six hits on the day. Gonzalez finished 6-for-10 with three triples, a double, four runs scored and five RBI. Antolin went 6-for-7 with four doubles, three walks, She scored three times and drove in six.
The Marauders (16-11 overall, 7-5 Northern Sun) posted a quick run in the opener, but it would take a while before the offense really began to roll. Gonzalez hit her first of her three triples with two outs in the first inning. A wild pitch scored the junior shortstop and U-Mary led 1-0 after one.
The lead proved short-lived as the Dragons (6-23, 1-11) tallied twice in the second inning. MSUM's 2-1 lead would stand until the fifth.
After stranding four runners in scoring position over the course of three innings, U-Mary finally broke through for four runs in the fifth. After a leadoff walk by
Jenna Button and an infield single to the pitcher for
Jessica Alvarado, Gonzalez tripled to right center to score both runners and give the Marauders a 3-2 lead. A Dragons error allowed Gonzalez to score and a run-scoring double by Antolin pushed U-Mary's advantage to 5-2.
Highlighted by a two-run triple by Button, the Marauders would seal the win with a five-run seventh inning.
The Marauders pounded out 11 hits and was also aided by four walks and four errors by the Dragons.
Gonzalez led the Marauders attack, hitting three triples in five trips to the plate. She scored twice and drove in two. Antolin hit two doubles and walked twice, driving in a run and scoring once. Button had two hits, added a walk, scored twice and drove in two. Alvarado added two hits, scored twice and drove in a run.
Erin Keen pickled up the win for U-Mary, allowing two earned runs and four hits while striking out four in five innings.
Emily Sinclair picked up her second save of the season, throwing two scoreless innings and giving up just one hit.
The Marauders offense started slowly in the second game before its record explosion.
Down 1-0, U-Mary tied the game in the second when a wild pitch scored Antolin. The Dragons retaliated with seven runs in the second to lead 8-1. A two-run double by Antolin in the third cut the deficit to five but the Dragons crossed the plate another four times in the third to build a 12-3 advantage.
Behind seven hits, four walks and an error, U-Mary tallied an amazing 12 times in the fifth to take a lead that wouldn't be relinquished. Eight of the runs were unearned.
The scoring started simply with a sacrifice fly by Gonzalez, a run-scoring single by
Kristin Ormsby and a two-run single by Antolin. After a Dragons error with two outs loaded the bases, Button doubled home two runs and Alvarado singled home another pair of baserunners. Gonzalez then walked before
Allison Brown jacked a three-run home run to left field. The inning ended with U-Mary amazingly ahead 15-12.
The Marauders tacked on three more runs in the fifth and another two in the seventh while holding the Dragons to a pair of runs in the fifth and a final one in the sixth.
U-Mary pounded out 21 hits in the game with six players having multiple hits. Antolin led the way with a 4-for-5 performance at the plate. She had two doubles, scored twice and drove in five.
Brown went 3-for-5 with four RBI and four runs scored. Gonzalez had three hits, scored twice and drove in three runs. Button added three hits, scoring twice and knocking home three.
Brooke Hageness was the fifth U-Mary player with three hits in the game. She also scored three times.
The Dragons pounded out 18 hits but also committed two costly errors.
The Marauders finish off the week with two games at the University of Minnesota Crookston on Friday. April 6.
