James Carroll homered in the opener and
Tyler Steffan posted two hits in game two but the University of Mary couldn't keep pace with 16
th-ranked Minnesota State University. The Mavericks swept the homestanding Marauders, claiming the opener 6-1 and game two 11-1.
Kyle Lozensky hurled a complete game for U-Mary in game one but a shaky defensive effort early on by the Marauders proved problematic. The junior righty allowed eight hits and three earned runs while striking out five in seven innings.
U-Mary (3-23 overall, 2-10 NSIC) committed four errors and three of the first four runs scored by Minnesota State (19-5, 7-1) were unearned. Mavericks leadoff hitter reached on a Marauders miscue and would eventually score. MSU tallied twice in the second, with one runner scoring after reaching on an error. A two-out error by the Marauders in the third inning led to another unearned run and a 4-0 lead for the Mavericks.
Carroll unloaded a solo shot over the left field wall in the fourth to cut the Marauders deficit to three, It was Carroll's third home run of the season.
The Mavericks would seal the game with two more runs in the fifth.
Both teams finished with eight hits. Duane Kiyota, Jr., paced the Marauders with two knocks, including a double.
Jon Flattery led the Mavericks attack with two RBI and two runs scored.
Ben Kincaid picked up the complete game win in the opener for MSU, striking out 11 without a walk.
The Mavericks needed no additional assistance from the Marauders in the second game, pounding out 17 hits on the way to an 11-1 win. Hitless through the first two innings, Matt Kuchenbecker and Patrick Dockendorf hit back-to-back home runs in the third inning and Minnesota State scored five time.
Down by ten runs, U-Mary plated its lone run in the seventh. Steffan had a two-out single and scored on a base hit by
Alex Deyle.
Steffen collected two of the Marauders seven hits.
The Marauders host the Mavericks in a doubleheader at 11 AM on Saturday, April 7, to conclude the four-game set. NOTE: THE START TIME WAS MOVED FORWARD FROM THE ORIGINAL TIME.
