Box Score 2 Winona, MN – Strong starting pitching performances went for naught as the University of Mary baseball team suffered 3-1 and 5-4 losses at Winona State University.
Kyal Williams allowed just three hits in the opener and
Michael Vollrath gave up only three earned runs in game two.
The opening game of the day was a pitching duel between Williams and Winona State's Brandon Verthien as both hurlers allowed just three hits. Williams allowed a single earned run and one walk while striking out one in his six inning complete game effort. In six innings, Verthein limited the Marauders to a single unearned run, walked five and struck out four. Zach Rickaway pitched a scoreless seventh to earn a save.
The Marauders opened the scoring in the second. Duane Kiyota, Jr., led off with a walk and gained second on a passed ball. A two-out single to center by Austin Grunstad scored Kiyota for a 1-0 U-Mary lead.
Defensive miscues would lead to the Warriors first two runs. After Williams walked one batter and hit another, an infield error allowed the tying run to score in the second. Another infield error in the third led to the Warriors scoring the infield run. A solo home run in the fifth by Lucas Warren extended the Winona State lead to 3-1.
The Marauders left two runners on base in the first and third innings. A hit and a walk brought the winning run to the plate in the seventh but a double play grounder shut down U-Mary's attempted rally.
U-Mary would blow a 3-1 lead in the second game, a 5-4 loss to Winona State.
Tyler Steffan led off the game with a single and would score on a groundout by Williams. Another defense lapse by the Marauders allowed the tying run to score in the second but U-Mary would recover.
Alex Deyle had a run-scoring single in the fourth and a double by Kiyota in the sixth scored
James Carroll for a 3-1 lead.
The Warriors scored once in the sixth to pull within a single run before Derek Wojcik hit a three run double in the seventh to score the winning runs for the Warriors.
Three straight hits led to a run in the eighth for U-Mary as Williams singled home Carroll, but one run was as close as the Marauders could draw.
Vollrath allowed five hits, two walks and three earned runs in six innings to suffer the loss.
Carroll and Kiyota both had two hits for the Marauders. Carroll scored twice and Kiyota drove in a run. Williams had two RBI.
The Marauders next host Military Appreciation Day on Wednesday, April 25, when Bemidji State University comes to town. Free food begins at 11:30 AM and the ceremonial first pitch is set for 12:30 PM.
