Williams Fires Marauders to Split with Mustangs

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bismarck, ND - Kyal Williams threw a complete game shutout and carried the University of Mary to a doubleheader split with Southwest Minnesota State University. The Marauders won the opener 7-0 before the Mustangs nudged U-Mary 6-5 in 10 innings to close the day.

Williams held the Mustangs (19-12 overall, 9-7 NSIC) to five hits and two walks in seven innings. The junior from Adelaide, South Australia, struck out four in recording his first shutout win. While Williams only set the Mustangs down in order once in the game, he never allowed more than one base runner in any inning. He allowed a runner to reach as far as second just three times.

A pitcher's duel early on, the Marauders (6-28, 5-15) struck first in the third inning. Duane Kiyota, Jr., and Alex Deyle opened the inning with singles before an error scored Kiyota with the first run of the day. Another Mustangs error in the fourth inning scored James Carroll, who had reached on a one-out single.

The Marauders busted the game wide open in the sixth with a five run outburst. Michael Stevenson and Kiyota both had two-run singles and Austin Grunstad singled home the fifth run.

Kiyota was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two RBI to pace the Marauders 11 hit attack. Deyle and Tyler Steffan also had two hits and Carroll scored twice.

U-Mary's offensive surge carried over to the second game as the Marauders tallied three times in the first. Tyler Steffan hit a leadoff single and eventually scored on a wild pitch. A two-run double by Steve Pletan extended the Marauders advantage to 3-0.

Slowly the Mustangs chipped away at the Marauders advantage, scoring once in the third before pulling even with two runs in the fourth. SMSU took its first lead at 4-3 with a single run in the fifth before adding another solo run in the seventh.

Just as in the first game, the Marauders took advantage of two Mustangs miscues in the home half of the seventh to draw even. Grunstad led off with a single and would score on a groundout by Carroll. Stefan, who had walked, scored on a throwing error to knot the game at 5-5.

With neither team able to break through in the eighth or ninth, the Mustangs made use of a Marauders error and three walks, one with the bases loaded, to score the winning run. Hoping to even the game, the first two U-Mary hitters would reach base but a double play quickly extinguished the Marauders hopes of tying the game.

Grunstad paced the Marauders 11-hit attack with three singles. Carroll and Marice Burrought both had two hits. Tyler Steffan scored twice.

Adam Thygesen and Kyle Young led the Mustangs with three hits each and Chris Eichten had two.

The Marauders are now off until facing Winona State University on Aril 21.
