Dreary Day, Dreary Results as #3 Warriors Sweep Marauders

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bismarck, ND – The University of Mary struggled offensively on a wet day against one of the top teams in the nation and #3 Winona State University cracked six home runs in two games as the Warriors rolled past the Marauders 7-0 and 12-1.

The first game featured two strong pitching performances before rains came and interrupted the flow and forced a venue change.

The Warriors scored two in the first inning on an error and a two-run home run by Kim Wachholder. Rachel Davis then knuckled down and held Winona State scoreless the next two innings. Rain would halt the game in the top of the fourth. With the Marauders home field left unplayable, the two teams packed up and moved into town. Just over an hour later, the Warriors would increase their lead to 3-0. Winona State then broke the game wide open with four runs in the sixth inning.

The Marauders were limited to a single hit by Jessica Alvarado with one out in the first as Warriors pitcher Stacy Struzynski dominated the game. Struzynski struck out 12 hitters and walked just three to earn the win.

Winona State would blast five home runs in the second game to run away with the win. Two doubles and two home runs in a four-run first inning for the Warriors was followed by a three-run home run in the second as the Warriors took a 7-0 lead.

A Kristin Ormsby home run leading off the Marauders half of the second was the only run on the day by U-Mary. The Warriors responded with two more runs in the third, another run in the fourth and a final score in the fifth.

Jenna Button and Alvarado both had two hits for U-Mary. Ashley Walker had three hits and four RBI for WSU and Wachholder had two hits and four RBI.

The Marauders continue playing at home when U-Mary hosts conference foe Bemidji State University on Tuesday, April 17.
