Davis Hurls Marauders to Split with Peacocks

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 Bismarck, ND – Rachel Davis fired a complete game victory in the opener but the University of Mary fell short of its hopes to capture a sweep as the Marauders split a home doubleheader with Upper Iowa University. The Marauders collected game one 6-3 before dropping game two 6-4 in extra innings.

A senior from Portland, OR, Davis allowed just six hits and only one earned run in the 6-3 win. She struck out four, gave up six hits and didn't walk a batter.

The Peacocks (16-29 overall, 8-10 NSIC) tallied two unearned runs in the third on a two-out single by Hailey Haning to open the scoring but the Marauders (19-14, 10-8) responded immediately. Tricia Clarke led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Jenna Button. Jessica Alvarado followed with a hit and an Upper Iowa error on a Melissa Gonzalez ground ball scored Button. Allison Brown then singled home Alvarado to put U-Mary in front.

Brown extended the Marauders lead to 4-2 with a run-scoring hit in the fifth before a Haning home run to lead off the sixth pulled the Peacocks within a run.

U-Mary pushed its lead to 6-3 in the sixth. Brooke Hageness tripled home Clarke for one run. An Upper Iowa error on a Button grounder allowed Hageness to score the second run of the inning.

Clarke had two hits and scored twice for U-Mary. Brown had two hits and drove home two runs. Button scored twice and drove in a run.

Haning posted three RBI and two hits for Upper Iowa.

The Marauders again started from behind in the second game. Twice the Peacocks scored in the first. A run-scoring single by Gonzalez to score Button cut the deficit in half. U-Mary grabbed the lead in the second when freshman Brittney Hadley hit a two-run home run.

The lead quickly evaporated as the Peacocks scored twice in the third to jump ahead 4-3.

It took unto the sixth inning for the Marauders to catch up. A grounder by Alvarado was mishandled by the Upper Iowa pitcher and Clarke scored to tie the game.

With neither team able to score in the seventh, Upper Iowa would win the game in the eighth when Erin Keen hit one Peacock with the bases loaded to force home one run and then walked the next hitter to score a second run.

Just as in the seventh inning, U-Mary went down in order in the eighth.

Seven different Marauders had hits in the game and Button also added two walks. Hanning had two hits for UIU, scored twice and drove in a run.

The Marauders conclude the weekend when they host 3rd-ranked Winona State on Sunday, April 15, at 12 noon.
