Pitching, Hitting Click as Marauders Sweep Golden Eagles

GAME 1 BOX SCORE  /  GAME 2 BOX SCORE

Crookston, MN – Outstanding pitching performances by Kyle Lozensky and McKeon Meyhoff and an impressive offensive performance by the University of Mary led the Marauders baseball team to its first sweep of the season. U-Mary destroyed the Golden Eagles 17-1 in the opener and claimed a 7-2 win in game two.

Starting pitchers Lozensky and Meyhoff didn't allow an earned run in 11 innings of combined work. Lozensky threw five scoreless innings in game one and Meyhoff gave up two unearned runs in six innings of work in the nightcap.

The Marauders (5-25 overall, 4-12 NSIC) made Lozensky's job easy in the first game, spotting him seven runs before he took to the mound. The 17 runs is the most scored by the Marauders since plating 19 against the Golden Eagles (8-19, 3-11) on April 7, 2009.

Tyler Steffan scored the first run and drove in the last run as the Marauders exploded for seven runs in the first inning of the day. Six different U-Mary hitters registered an RBI and a hit in the inning with a seventh run scoring on a passed ball.

After posting a single run in the second to take an 8-0 lead, the Marauders offense remained quiet the next two innings before ramping up once again. A run-scoring double by Steffan, his second of the day, highlighted a three-run fifth inning for U-Mary. Marice Burrough singled home two runs with two more crossing the plate on passed balls in a four-run sixth as U-Mary pushed its lead to 15-0. After UMC scored its lone run in the sixth, the Marauders tallied twice in the seventh for a season-high 17 runs.

Hitting in the leadoff slot for the Marauders, Steffan was a true sparkplug. He scored four runs, drove in two, hit two doubles and walked three times. The senior centerfielder was officially 2-for-3 at the plate.

Sam Ingemansen led the Marauders 17-hit attack with a 3-for-3 effort. The sophomore catcher scored twice, drove in a run and stole two bases. Steve Pletan was 2-for-3, scored twice and had two RBI. Duane Kiyota, Jr., was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI. Austin Grunstad and James Carroll both scored twice. Twelve Marauders registered hits in the game.

Lozensky had another strong outing on the mound with his five shutout innings. He struck out seven, didn't allow a walk and gave up six hits. The junior right hander threw a complete game against nationally-ranked Minnesota State on Saturday in his previous start.

Game two proved much more competitive. Once again the Marauders would break on top, scoring twice in the first inning. James Carroll doubled home the first run of the game and scored on a single through the left side by Pletan. UMC evened the game with two unearned runs in the fourth as the Marauders committed a passed ball and an error on the infield.

U-Mary didn't wait long to regain the lead. Grunstad reached on an error to start the fourth inning and Steffan followed with a single up the middle. An error scored Grunstad and a Carroll sacrifice fly to right field brought home Steffan. After Kyal Williams was hit by a pitch, Pletan singled home Cory Herback, who had reached earlier in the inning on an error.

Williams and Pletan opened the seventh inning with back to back doubles to increase U-Mary's lead to 6-2. An error soon scored Pletan to bump the Marauders lead to five runs. UMC scored a single run in the seventh but Sam Salveson and Travis Famias would keep the Golden Eagles off the scoreboard the final two innings.

Pletan finished the game 3-for-5 with three RBI and a run scored. Steffan and Herback both went 2-for-5. Steffan scored one run and Herback crossed the plate twice and drove in a run. Carroll had two RBI and scored a run.

PJ Zwack led UMC with three hits. Three other players had two hits apiece for the Golden Eagles.

Meyhoff picked up his second win of the season after allowing seven hits and two walks in six innings. He struck out two hitters. Jeff Skadeland allowed one unearned run in an inning and Salveson and Famias both delivered shutout innings.

The Marauders return home to host Southwest Minnesota State University in doubleheaders beginning at noon on Saturday and Sunday, April 14-15.
