St. Paul, MN –
Jenna Button rapped out six hits for the University of Mary but the Marauders softball team struggled in key situations in a pair of one-run road losses at Concordia University – St. Paul. The Golden Bears pulled out a walk-off 3-2 win in the opener and held off a Marauders rally for a 4-3 victory in game two.
A senior from Menifee, CA, Button singled in each of her four at bats in the opener and scored a run. She followed with a 2-for-3 performance with a walk in game two to lead the Marauders (14-11 overall, 5-5 Northern Sun) attack.
Button opened the scoring in the opener, singling with one out in the second. She reached home on a single by
Jessica Alvarado and a Golden Bears (20-11, 5-3) error. A two-out double by
Allison Brown scored Alvarado for a 2-0 Marauders lead.
After the Golden Bears scored solo runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to pull even, U-Mary was poised to break the game open in the seventh. Button singled with one out and Alvarado reached on an error. Both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt but neither would score, opening the door for Concordia.
With one out, Alicia Meiser reached on a bunt single. A U-Mary error on the next batter moved Meiser to second and she would score the winning run on a single up the middle by Erin Tjornhom.
The Golden Bears jumped out to a quick lead in game two, scoring twice in the opening stanza before posting two more in the fifth to build a 4-0 lead.
After leaving the bases full in the fourth and stranding two more in the fifth, the Marauders broke through in the sixth. Brown led off with a single and scored on a bad throw after a single by
Melissa Gonzalez. Following a fielder's choice, freshman
Kristin Ormsby cracked a two-run home run to left, pulling the Marauders within 4-3. It was Ormsby's third round tripper of the week.
Still down one, Button and Alvarado hit one-out singles in the seventh but the Marauders were unable to even the game.
The Marauders held an 11-8 edge in hits. Button, Alvarado, Gonzalez and Sami Antolin each had two hits for U-Mary. Katie Anderson and Meiser both had two hits and two runs scored for Concordia.
Four games into a 10-game road swing, the Marauders next play two non-conference games at Northern State University on April 3.
