GAME 2 BOX SCORE
Bismarck, ND – Defensive miscues cost the University of Mary baseball team in the opener and the Marauders couldn't keep pace offensively in the second game as Concordia University – St. Paul swept U-Mary 4-3 and 11-0. The Golden Bears swept the four-game Northern Sun series from the Marauders.
Jeff Skadeland was outstanding on the mound for U-Mary (2-20 overall, 1-7 NSIC), limiting Concordia (13-7, 5-3) to five hits and one unearned run in six innings. But it was his fielding that proved to be the Marauders undoing.
The junior from Williston, ND, held the Golden Bears hitless into the fifth inning, retiring 14 of the first 15 batters he faced. The only Concordia baserunner reached when he was struck by a pitch.
The game began to unravel with two outs in the fifth. With no one on base, Kyle Long bunted the ball back to Skadeland, who threw high to first base for an error as Long just beat the tag attempt. Long stole second and scored on a base hit by Jared Kramer to right center. Paul Giel III followed with a double to right. Another single to right by Kyle Dalton scored both baserunners and Concordia led 3-0, with all runs unearned.
The Marauders would fight back in the bottom of the fifth, scoring twice to pull within a run.
Tyler Steffan led off with a single up the middle and
Alex Deyle had a one-out hit to center. After a ground out advanced both runners into scoring position,
Cory Herback doubled in both runners with a shot to left center. He was thrown out at third on the play to end the inning.
U-Mary made use of an error by Concordia in the sixth to even the game. With one out,
James Carroll reached second on a wild throw from Golden Bears third baseman Bryan Lippencott.
Sam Salveson followed with a single through the left side to score pinch runner
Marice Burrough. A single by Steve Pletan and a balk pushed both runners into scoring position, but U-Mary couldn't capitalize as Adam Kramer would strike out the next two Marauders to end the inning.
The Golden Bears would win the game with back-to-back doubles by pinch hitter Doug Stearns and Long to start the seventh inning.
Travis Famias entered the game and recorded three straight outs to strand Long at third and keep the Marauders within a run. The Marauders were unable to rally as Kramer retired U-Mary in order to end the seven inning ballgame.
Skadeland took the loss, striking out three and walking none in the game. Kramer allowed two earned runs and struck out nine in his complete game win. In his last two starts he has allowed one earned run in 13 innings.
Salveson and Deyle led the Marauders with two hits each. U-Mary posted seven hits to five for CSP.
The Golden Bears pulled away from the Marauders quickly in the second game, scoring once in the second, three times in the third, five in the fourth and two more in the fifth. Concordia posted 15 hits while the Marauders were limited to four in a game shortened to seven innings by the 10-run rule.
Brad Horan was the Marauders most effective pitcher. He threw 2.2 scoreless innings, striking out two and giving up just one hit.
Chris Peterson hurled the shutout for the Golden Bears, striking out four hitters and walking two.
The Marauders continue their 10-game home stand when they host Northern State University on April 3. First pitch is set for 1:30 PM.
