St. Cloud, MN – Big blasts and an extended outing by
Emily Sinclair propelled the University of Mary to its second Northern Sun sweep of the season. The Marauders hit the road to take two from St. Cloud State 8-5 and 3-0 as U-Mary cracked three home runs and Sinclair picked up a shutout win and a save.
Sinclair pitched eight shutout innings on the day. The senior threw a scoreless seventh inning in the opener to earn her first save of the season. She started the second game and spun a five-hit complete game whitewash of the Huskies, allowing just five hits and three walks while striking out six.
The Marauders (14-9 overall, 5-3 NSIC) took the early lead in the opener as Alison Brown double home two runs in the first.
SCSU (16-16, 2-4) cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth but U-Mary responded with four runs in the fifth.
Melissa Gonzalez doubled home one run and freshman
Kristin Ormsby cracked a three-run shot, her second home run of the week.
The Marauders would need all the runs possible as the Huskies retaliated with four runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth.
Rachel Davis came on to slow the rally and tossed two scoreless innings of relief before Sinclair finished the game in the seventh.
A run-scoring double by
Tricia Clarke in the seventh concluded the scoring in game one.
Brown, Gonzalez and Clarke each had two of U-Mary's nine hits.
Jessica Alvarado would score twice. SCSU was held to five hits.
Gonzalez and Sami Antolin both homered in a much less offensive second game as the two teams combined for nine hits.
With Sinclair holding the Huskies in check, Gonzalez cracked a two-run home run in the fourth inning for what would be the only runs the Marauders would need. Antolin, the only U-Mary player with two hits in the game, hit a solo shot in the seventh inning to seal the game.
Sinclair increased the heat as the game progressed, recording three of her five strikeouts in the last two innings. She fired a perfect seventh to close strong.
The start of a 10-game road trip, the Marauders next face Concordia University – St. Paul on April 1.
