Bismarck, ND – Missed opportunities proved fatal for the University of Mary softball team as #22 Augustana swept the Marauders 3-0 and 1-0 in Northern Sun play. U-Mary was its seven game winning streak snapped as the Marauders stranded eight baserunners in each of the two games.
The Marauders (11-8 overall, 2-2 NSIC) stranded six baserunners in scoring position in the 3-0 loss in the opener. U-Mary loaded the bases in the first inning on two hits and an Augie (23-4, 3-1) error but couldn't push across a run. In the second, U-Mary had two hits and just one out but failed to score.
Brooke Hageness hit a two-out triple in the fourth and another Marauders runner was left on second in the sixth.
Augustana scored the lone run needed in the first inning. Chelsi Winskowski led off the game with a single to right and advanced to second as the Marauders defense seemed to forget about her. Jenny Brown followed with a single to score Winskowski and the Vikings led 1-0. Augie sealed the opener with two more runs in the fourth.
Jessica Alvarado led the Marauders offense with two of the team's seven hits.
Erin Keen scattered 11 hits in the game and allowed two earned runs and no walks while striking out two in the complete game effort for U-Mary. Ashley Meyer picked up the win for Augie, striking out one U-Mary hitter while not walking anyone.
U-Mary's#
Emily Sinclair# and Augie's Janelle Trautmann locked up in a pitching duel in the nightcap as both pitchers kept the game scoreless.
Sinclair held the Vikings in check until the seventh. After retiring the first hitter, Augie used two singles and a walk to load the bases. Chelsey Durland then dropped a single into right field to score pinch runner Theresa McMahon just before Hageness' throw reached home. Sinclair would retire the next two hitters but the single run proved enough.
Hageness gave the Marauders a chance to even the game in the home half of the seventh, poking a one out single to the right side. She stole second to get into scoring position but was thrown out at third on a ground ball by
Jenna Button. Button advanced to second on the play but Durland, on in relief of Trautman, struck out pinch hitter
Brittney Hadley to end the game.
Clutch hits were also hard to find for the Marauders throughout the second game. Two runners were stranded in the second.
Tricia Clarke and Hageness led off the fifth with singles. After a fielder's choice forced Clarke out at third, a mental error on a ground ball by
Jessica Alvarado would load the bases. Trautmann would retire the next two hitters to escape the jam and keep the game scoreless.
Clarke, Hageness and freshman
Kristin Ormsby all had two hits in the game and U-Mary held a 7-6 advantage in hits.
Sinclair threw her eighth complete game, allowing six hits and two walks while striking out one. Trautmann picked up the win after throwing 6.1 scoreless innings, giving up six hits and no walks with two strikeouts.
The Marauders continue their six-game home stand with a conference doubleheader with Northern State on Wednesday, March 28, at 2 PM.
