GAME 2 BOX SCORE
Wayne, NE – Whether you are a fan of pitching duals or slugfests, the University of Mary baseball doubleheader at Wayne State College had something for everyone. Unfortunately for the Marauders, winning either style was not in the equation as the Wildcats captured 2-0 and 12-9 contests.
Jeff Skadeland was masterful on the mound for the Marauders (2-16 overall, 1-3 NSIC) in the opener. The junior from Williston, ND, allowed just one earned run while pitching a complete game. In six innings he held Wayne State (12-6, 3-1) to four hits, walked another four and struck out two.
Skadeland worked his way into trouble in the third inning as the first three hitters reached base, two on walks and the other with a single. The Marauders turned a double play up the middle, conceding a run, and Skadeland induced another grounder, this one to second, to escape the inning with limited damage. The double play was one of three in the game for U-Mary.
Two of U-Mary's four errors in the game would double the Wayne State lead in the fourth.
In five different innings the Marauders placed runners in scoring position but could never push a run home. In the fifth
Marice Burrough reached third after a single, stolen base and a balk but was stranded. U-Mary would leave six runners on base in the game.
James Carroll led the Marauders offense with three of the team's five hits. U-Mary also stole three bases.
Tom Doran earned the win for Wayne State, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out six in seven innings.
Unable to score in the opener, the Marauders posted a season-high nine runs in game two, but the effort wasn't enough in the 12-9 loss.
U-Mary jumped out to a quick lead after scoring five times in the second inning. A
Sam Ingemansen single scored the first run. Casey Herback then doubled in two runs and Austin Grunstad followed with a two-run single.
Wayne State didn't wait long to respond, scoring twice in the second before U-Mary imploded in the third. Three Marauders errors, a walk and six hits for the Wildcats led to seven Wayne State runs, only three of which were earned.
Down 10-5 after the Wildcats scored a single run in the sixth, the Marauders tallied twice in the seventh on run-scoring singles by
Sam Salveson and Ingemansen to climb within 10-7. Wayne State then matched U-Mary with two if its own in the home half of the inning to build the lead back to five runs.
The Marauders made a final run in the eighth as the first three U-Mary hitters singled and the fourth reached on an error that brought home one run. A fielder's choice scored another run for the Marauders but the next three hitters were retired to end the inning. U-Mary then went down in order in the ninth.
Four Marauders had two hits as U-Mary totaled 12 in the game to 13 for Wayne State. Herback led the way with two hits from the leadoff spot. He also scored twice and drove in two runs. Grunstad had two hits, scored once and drove in two. Steffan posted two hits, scored twice, walked twice and stole two bases. Ingemansen also had two hits, knocked home two runs and crossed the plate once.
Pat Burkhardt led all players with three hits for Wayne State. He also scored twice. Travis Parsons drove in three for the Wildcats.
Next up for the Marauders is the home opener as U-Mary will host Concordia University – St. Paul in a four-game set on March 31-April 1.
