Minneapolis – Unable to maintain an early advantage, the University of Mary baseball team was clipped 5-4 by Augustana in the Metrodome. It was the final scheduled non-conference game for the Marauders, who open Northern Sun competition on March 24.
James Carroll led the Marauders offense with two singles and
Kyal Williams and
Travis Famias combined to throw 2.2 scoreless innings of relief for U-Mary.
Trailing by a run, the Marauders posted three of their own in the bottom of the second inning to take an early lead as the first five hitters of the inning reached base for U-Mary.
Steve Pletan was hit by a pitch to lead off the second and
Tyler Steffan and
Marice Burrough followed with singles to load the bases.
Sam Ingemansen drew a walk to force home the first run and a single by
Alex Deyle scored Steffan for a 2-1 U-Mary lead. Duane Kiyota drove in the third run on a sacrifice fly to left field.
The Vikings scored once in the third before taking a 4-3 lead with two runs in the sixth inning. Struggling with his control,
Jeff Skadeland hit four Augie batters and allowed two hits in the inning. The Marauders escaped any major damage as Ingemansen threw out one baserunner attempting to steal and U-Mary turned a double play on a grounder to Deyle.
Augie would extend its lead to 5-3 on a Jack Goihl home run in the seventh.
U-Mary cut its deficit to one run in the eighth. Austin Grunstad led off with a double and moved to third on a ground ball by Pletan. With two outs, Steffan was hit by a pitch. Grunstad would then score just before Stefan was thrown out attempting to steal second.
In the ninth Ingemansen earned a walk with one out but could not advance as the Marauders dropped their sixth straight game.
Marauders pitchers combined to give up nine hits and seven walks while plunking five Vikings. The squad did strand 11 Augies on base. Williams allowed one hit and one walk in 1.2 scoreless innings of relief and Famias pitched a perfect ninth inning.
