St. Joseph, MO – A rare triple-header turned into three tough losses for the University of Mary baseball team on the road against Missouri Western State University.
Sam Salveson stroked six hits on the day for U-Mary but the Griffins held the Marauders to a single run and 15 hits over the three games. MWSU claimed 5-0, 4-0 and 3-1 wins over U-Mary with the Griffins last win coming on a walk off home run in extra innings.
The series originally was set for a doubleheader today and a single game on Sunday but anticipated inclement weather for tomorrow led to the tripleheader.
Salveson was a perfect 3-for-3 in the Marauders 5-0 loss in the opener. The sophomore right fielder posted half the U-Mary hits in the contest.
The lone walk of the game by the Marauders led to the winning run for the Griffins.
Matt Franck issued a free pass to Shawn Egge, who proceeded to steal second and score on a single by Michael Schulze. MWSU scored a second time in the inning on a sacrifice fly. Later the Griffins would tack on two more runs in the third and a solo score in the sixth.
Schulze ended the game with three hits, two runs and an RBI for MWSU.
Franck,
Brad Horan and
Kyle Lozensky would combine to allow just six hits and one walk in six innings. Brandon Simmons threw a complete game shutout for the Griffins, striking out two hitters.
McKeon Meyhoff was strong on the hill for the Marauders in the second game. The freshman starter allowed just two earned runs and six hits in 5.1 innings of U-Mary's 4-0 loss. Meyhoff walked two and struck out one.
James Majeske-Mikyska came on in relief to hurl 1.2 scoreless and hitless innings of relief for the Marauders and
Jeff Skadeland allowed one run on one hit in his inning of work. Overall the pitching staff gave up seven hits and three walks in eight innings of work
Ethan Ward was even more effective for Missouri Western, pitching seven scoreless innings, striking out seven and allowing three hits and three walks. Jake Jones pitched two perfect innings for the save.
The Griffins opened the scoring with an unearned run in the third inning. Spencer Shockley would crack a two-run home run in the fourth for a 3-0 MWSU lead.
Salveson would again pace the U-Mary attack in the third game, a heartbreaking 3-1 loss for the Marauders in the ninth inning of a contest scheduled for seven.
U-Mary struck first for its lone run of the day. Salveson singled with one out in the fourth and scored on a double to right field by Steve Pletan. It was one of three hits again for Salveson. Pletan would post two hits in the game.
Missouri Western wasted no time in evening the score as Nate Ramler singled in a run in the home half of the fourth.
The Marauders managed get a runner into scoring position in the eighth inning but couldn't push him home, opening the door for the Griffins to win the game in the ninth. Following a leadoff walk and a sacrifice to second base, Grant Fink hit a two-run home run to left field to end the game.
U-Mary used five pitchers in the game. The group combined to allow three runs on seven hits and a walk. Skadeland and
Travis Famias eached worked two scoreless innings and struck out two hitters apiece.
Kyal Williams struck out four hitters in 2.1 scoreless innings.
Nick Jurado went eight innings for the Griffins, allowing five hits and two walks while striking out eight.
The Marauders slip to 1-11 with the losses. The Griffins improve to 8-6.
U-Mary next faces Augustana at Mall of America Field (AKA Metrodome) on March 17-18.
