Winter Haven, FL - Freshman
McKeon Meyhoff pitched a complete game in his first collegiate start and
Kyle Lozensky allowed just five hits in the opening game but the University of Mary was unable to take advantage of the strong starting pitching in 4-2 and 1-0 losses to Gannon University. The doubleheader opened an eight-game spring break trip to Florida for the Marauders.
Meyhoff allowed the first batter of the game to score and then held Gannon completely in check throughout the remainder of the nightcap. The native of Hazen, ND, limited the Golden Knights to four hits while throwing a seven inning complete game. He walked two hitters, hit two, and struck out one.
Gannon's Jeff Jones was just slightly better in throwing a complete game shutout. He struck out nine and gave up three hits and six walks.
Cory Herback had a one-out double in the sixth before
Austin Grundstad would walk with two away but neither would score.
The game would end on a play at home.
Sam Salveson walked to open the inning and Mo Burrough was sent in to pinch run. With two outs
James Carroll would walk.
Alex Deyle followed with a single to right but Burrough would be out at home plate to end the day.
In the opener, Lozensky gave up five hits and a walk in 5.1 innings but he allowed four runs in a 4-2 Marauders loss. The junior struck out three Gannon players and walked just one.
U-Mary opened the scoring in the top of the first when a two-out single by
Christopher Jolly scored Grunstad.
After Gannon scored single runs in the first and the fourth, the Marauders evened the game in the sixth. Mike Stevenson doubled to right field and would score on a two out error by the Golden Knights shortstop.
Gannon would break the tie in bottom of the inning, scoring twice in the sixth. A double, a bunt single and a steal would place both runners in scoring position. A throwing error would bring in the winning run and a single would double the Gannon lead.
The Marauders were limited to four hits and one earned run in a seven inning complete game for Paul McKenna. He also struck out nine.
U-Mary next faces Saint Xavier on Monday, February 27.
