Minneapolis – Jumping right into the fire, the University of Mary baseball team opened the 2012 season against St. Cloud State University, one of the top teams in the country. Ranked eighth in the nation when the Marauders faced them, the Huskies are now fifth. SCSU opened up early leads in both games and swept U-Mary 15-2 and 11-2 at Mall of America Field (AKA the Metrodome).
The Marauders managed four hits in the double header with junior
Kyal Williams leading the way with two hits. He added a walk and drove in a run. The first baseman from Australia also pitched one inning, allowing three unearned runs.
Sam Salveson, Austin Grunstad and Duane Kiyota also drove in runs for U-Mary and shortstop
Alex Deyle had two steals.
On the mound, freshman
Travis Famias made a strong debut for the Marauders, throwing two scoreless innings. The lefty from Bismarck, ND, struck out four hitters and allowed just two hits.
Starting pitcher
Kyle Lozensky was solid in the opener for the Marauders, allowing four runs – just two earned – in three innings. He struck out three and gave up four hits and two walks.
The Huskies scored the first 10 runs of the game, posting two in each of the second, third and fourth innings before busting through with four in the fifth. SCSU tacked on another five runs – all unearned - in the eighth inning in the 15-2 win.
The Marauders would score twice in the sixth on an RBI single by Williams and a run-scoring groundout by Salveson.
In the opener the Marauders posted two runs on two hits, committed four errors and walked 10 batters. Seven of the Huskies 15 runs were unearned.
Walks and errors would also hurt the Marauders in an 11-2 loss in the second game. U-Mary gave up just seven hits but walked nine batters and hit five. Defensively the Marauders committed three miscues and allowed three unearned runs.
SCSU scored the first eight runs of game two, half coming in the fourth inning. U-Mary would finally cross the plate twice in the eighth inning on a bases loaded walk by Kiyota and a fielder's choice grounder to shortstop by Grunstad.
Next up for the Marauders is their spring trip to Winter Haven, FL, where the team opens with Gannon University on February 25.
