2012 Season Ends Indoors When Marauders Face Golden Eagles at the Alerus Center

SATURDAY: In the final game of the 2012 football season, the University of Mary will face the University of Minnesota, Crookston indoors on November 10. A home game for the Golden Eagles, UMC has moved the game to the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, ND. Kickoff is set for 1 PM.

THE RECORDS: U-Mary is 4-6 overall and in the Northern Sun and 1-5 in the North Division... Minnesota, Crookston is 1-9 overall / NSIC and 0-6 in the NSIC North.

LAST GAME: The Marauders dropped a 53-14 decision at #9 University of Minnesota Duluth... The Golden Eagles lost 52-20 at Northern State.

LAST YEAR: U-Mary finished 5-6 overall, 4-6 in the NSIC and 3-3 in the NSIC North… UMC finished 1-10 overall, 0-10 in the NSIC and 0-6 in the NSIC North.
 
HEAD COACHES: U-Mary's all-time winningest head coach, Myron Schulz owns a record of 97-54 in his 14th season at the helm of the Marauders. Synonymous with Marauders football, Schulz has been a member of U-Mary's coaching staff in 22 of the program's 25 seasons. He has directed the squad to six national tournament appearances and four conference titles. His teams owned a streak of nine straight winning seasons and the Marauders are 73-36 in conference games. Since starting the transition to the NCAA in 2005, U-Mary is 42-42. The Marauders are 28-31 in Northern Sun contests... University of Minnesota, Crookston head coach Paul Miller is in his first season as had coach of the Golden Eagles. Miller originally joined the UMC staff in 2011 as the offensive coordinator. The Golden Eagles offense improved impressively in his first season, increasing from 217.5 yards per game to 304.5 yards. Much of the improvement was due to the commitment to running the ball, averaging 231 yards per contest on the ground. With over 35 years of coaching experience at the high school and college level, Miller previously was a head coach at NCAA Division III schools St. Olaf (1997-2001) and Hamline (2005-06).

THE MARAUDERS-GOLDEN EAGLES SERIES HISTORY: In a series that started in 1995 when both schools were members of the North Dakota College Athletic Conference, the University of Mary holds a 9-1 advantage over the University of Minnesota, Crookston. The Marauders took the first match-up 49-23 and the second 20-13 before the Golden Eagles claimed their only win of the series, 24-14 at home in 1997. The Marauders have won the last seven meetings, including six straight since becoming an NCAA Division II member... 2006: Blair Sandy threw for two touchdowns and ran for one in a 24-0 Marauders road win. Sandy ran for 111 yards and passed for 128. Defensively  U-Mary gave up just 159 yards and intercepted four passes... 2007: Shawn Melland returned an interception for a touchdown and James Patterson scooped and scored on a UMC fumble in a Marauders 38-0 win at home. UMC gained just 146 yards. Bayland Rippenkroeger ran for 104 yards and Sandy threw for 200 yards and two scores. Jesse Laber had 2.5 sacks... 2008: Jamal Lomax scored twice and ran for 129 yards, Mike Williams caught two of Henry Lau's three touchdown passes and Melland returned a fumble for a score in the Marauders 52-9 home win. UMC managed only 146 yards of offense... 2009: Terry Newsome opened the game with a 98 yard kickoff return for a touchdown and later caught one of Lau's four touchdown passes. Lomax ran for 158 yards and Lau completed 21-of-29 passes for 203 yards. The Marauders limited UMC to 200 yards... 2010: The Marauders returned three interceptions and a blocked punt for touchdowns in a 48-0 homecoming win. Lomax led the UM offense with 48 yards rushing and ran for a score. U-Mary limited UMC to 149 total yards and nine first downs while forcing four turnovers... 2011: On an incredibly windy day, Josh Edwards threw two touchdown passes in his first career start as U-Mary earned a 31-0 road win. Dariouse Gravely ran for 108 yards and Josh Murray added 87 yards and a touchdown on the ground. Richard Haley ran for 179 yards for UMC.

QUICK LOOK AT MINNESOTA, CROOKSTON: QUICK LOOK AT THE UMC GOLDEN EAGLES: A program that has struggled mightily for the last decade, the Golden Eagles have made strides this season. UMC snapped a 39-game Northern Sun losing streak when the Golden Eagles defeated Southwest Minnesota State 33-28 on September 22 as Richard Haley ran for 232 yards and three touchdowns. Since U-Mary became a member of the Northern Sun in 2007, UMC has a conference record of 3-56 (two wins over MSUM and one over Southwest Minnesota State) and an overall record of 8-56. A member of the NSIC since 1998, UMC last had a winning record in 2000. Since 2002, UMC is 9-90 in NSIC play and 14-104 overall. Even though they have just one win the Golden Eagles have been competitive in many games and feature arguably the best back in the NSIC in Haley. The senior is second in the NSIC with 1,047 yards rushing. He is averaging 5.0 yards per carry and has six touchdowns. Haley also has 22 catches for 127 yards. QB AJ Barge is completing 55.3 per cent of his passes and has thrown for 1,324 yards and eight scores. Marcus Cheatham leds UMC with 36 catches for 419 yards and six scores. The defense is led by senior defensive back Cecil Brown. He is third in the NSIC in tackles with 106 tackles (56 solo). Brown also has 4.5 tackles for loss, has recovered three fumbles and caused two. Drew Selvestra has a team-high 7.5 tackles for loss and 3.0 sacks. Freedom McCullough has four interceptions, two fumble recoveries and three pass breakups. UMC leads the NSIC in pass defense, allowing just 190.7 yards/game, but has allowed 22 touchdown passes and a conference-worst 8.7 yards per pass. UMC is last in rush defense at 238.4 yards/game and 6.3 yards/carry. The Golden Eagles are 15th in scoring offense and 16th (last) in scoring defense (41.5 points/game).  

LAST WEEK: A balanced attack by the 9th ranked University of Minnesota Duluth battered U-Mary 53-14. UMD ran for 270 yards and passed for 294 to total 564. The Marauders were limited to 251 yards, including 137 on the ground. In the running for another NCAA playoff berth and an NSIC conference title, UMD scored the first 28 points of the game before U-Mary got on the board... The Marauders posted their first points after Jake Nicholson forced a Bulldogs fumble that was recovered by Preston Tescher at the UMD 23 yard line. Five plays later Craig Bagnell scored from three yards out, pulling U-Mary within 28-7 with 1:00 left in the first half... Not content to sit on its lead, the Bulldogs tacked on a 46 yard field goal by Andrew Brees as time expired to enter intermission leading 31-7. UMD then scored on its first three possessions of the second half... U-Mary then closed the game with an impressive possession, driving 77 yards on 13 plays. Zach Roberson scored from one yard out with 13 seconds left in the game. The possession ate up 7:27 of the clock. Evan Gross ran for 67 yards and Dariouse Gravely picked up 57 to headline the Marauders attack. Nick Jolliffe caught three passes for 39 yards to lead the aerial game. Defensively Grant Singer piled up a game-high 14 tackles. Nick Giannosa and Troy Guptill both had tackles for loss...
Chase Vogler was the key figure in the Bulldogs attack. The senior went 19-of-24 for 260 yards and three touchdowns through the air and also ran for 45 yards. Zach Zweifel caught eight passes for 105 yards and a touchdown and Joe Reichert had six grabs for 86 yards and one score. Aaron Sikorski ran for 82 yards to lead UMD run attack.

Marauders Football to Close Season at Alerus Center: The final 2012 regular season football game for the University of Mary will be played at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks, ND. Originally scheduled for Crookston, MN, on November 10, the University of Minnesota, Crookton shifted the game indoors. The Alerus Center, home of the University of North Dakota football team, seats 12,283 people and features an AstroTurf Magic Carpet playing surface. Tickets will be $12 for adults, $8 for students (ages 13-18), $6 for children (6-12) and seniors (62 and over). Doors will open an hour ahead of game time. Tickets can be purchased through the Alerus Center and Ticketmaster. Tailgating for UMC and U-Mary fans will be allowed outside the gate two in the south parking lot. The main entrance for the game will be gate one.

WHERE'S THE SUN? The Marauders game vs. the Golden Eagles at the Alerus Center is U-Mary's first game in a covered field since playing Northern State University in the Metrodome on November 10, 2007.

BUBBLE BOYS: The Marauders are 2-0 in school history when playing inside. Twice U-Mary played Northern State in the Metrodome, defeating the Wolves 20-7 in 2006 and 37-13 in 2007.

STEFFAN MOVES TO SECOND IN YARDAGE: All-American WR Tyler Steffan moved into second place in career reception yardage in the Minnesota Duluth game. The senior now has 2,437 yards to edge past Seth Meier (2,421). Steffan needs four catches in his final college game against Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday to tie Jake Pfau, U-Mary's newest Hall of Fame inductee, for second in career receptions. Steffan is already second all-time in touchdown receptions with 28. After setting a single-season touchdown reception record last season with 17, Steffan is also fifth all-time in career touchdowns (28).

THANK YOU SENIORS: Nine Marauders seniors play their final game for the Blue & Orange against Minnesota, Crookston on Saturday: Nick Giannosa (Las Vegas, ND), Mikey Ingemansen (Bismarck, ND), Ben Kringstad (Bismarck, ND), Colin Matthieson (Seattle, WA), Cornell McTier (North Hills, CA), Everest Moore (Palmer, AK), Bryan Sandy (Harvey, ND), Tyler Steffan (Dickinson, ND) and Mike Wagner (Killdeer, ND). Out of the nine, only McTier, a transfer from Glendale (CA) Community College, didn't play his whole career at U-Mary.

STEPPING FORWARD: In his first year in a starting role, SO WR Elby Pope (Grand Forks, ND) is third in the NSIC in pass receptions with 58. He is fourth in the conference in receiving yards with 834. Including his punt and kick return yardage plus his rushing yardage (1,344), Pope is fifth in the NSIC in all purpose yardage, averaging 134.4 yards/game. Pope has cracked 100 yards receiving four times in 2011:

SACK ATTACK: The Marauders lead the NSIC in sacks and are 12th in the NCAA, dropping the opposing quarterback 30 times for a loss of 233 yards. JR DE John Oyloe is second in the NSIC with 9.5 sacks. SR LB Mikey Ingemansen is fifth with 6.0 sacks, SO LB Grant Singer is 6th (5.5) and SO LB Troy Guptill is 7th (5.0).

GUSHER: A junior defensive end from oil country, John Oyloe (Williston, ND) is having an incredibly productive season. He is second in the NSIC in sacks (9.5), sixth in tackles for loss (13.5) and is tied for the lead in tackles by defensive linemen (65).

BEHIND THE LINE: SO LB Troy Guptill is 8th in the NSIC in tackles for loss with 12.5, including five sacks. This is the 1st season Guptill has seen significant snaps.

MIKEY ON THE SPOT: SR LB Mikey Ingemansen is second in the NSIC in fumbles recovered with three and is fourth in forced fumbles (2). A big play performer, Ingemansen is 5th in the NSIC in sacks with 6.0. He also has nine tackles for loss and has forced two fumbles.

PLAYS WELL WITH OTHERS: The Marauders passing game is an all-inclusive attack. Seven different players have 14 or more catches. Eight have caught a pass for 25 or more yards. Seven also have caught scoring passes and five have three or more touchdown receptions.
CLIMBING THE CHARTS: John Oyloe moved into second on the Marauders all-time list in tackles for loss with 30.5 and 7th in sacks (18.5).

PIN 'EM DOWN: Behind the efforts of K/P Tyler Ryan, opponents have returned just 10 punts in 49 kicks and the Marauders are third in net punting at 36.4 yards/kick. Nineteen times he has pinned opponents inside the 20 and only two punts have resulted in touchbacks. The 19 kicks inside the 20 leads the NSIC. Additionally, 24 of Ryan's 44 kickoffs have resulted in touchbacks and he is averaging 63.5 yards per kickoff (note: the distance to the end zone is 65 yards).

25: Marauders football is in its 25th season. The first varsity season for U-Mary was played in 1988 and the team went 2-7. In its first 24 seasons, the Marauders have a combined record of 161-89-1, posted 16 winning seasons, advanced to national playoffs 10 times and claimed six conference titles.
