Softball Holds First Practice of Season Outside at Bismarck Reaches Record Temps

Marauders open 2012 practice outside in January as Bismarck reached a record-high of 57 degrees.
Bismarck, ND – The University of Mary softball team held its first practice of 2012 outside today as temperatures reached the upper 50s under clear skies with a little breeze. Field conditions were dry at the Marauders softball field.

The Marauders probably aren't unique in holding their first practice outside. The big difference is that U-Mary is located in North Dakota. The average high temperature on January 5 in Bismarck is 23 degrees with a low of 2 degrees. In fact, an all-time high of 57 degrees was reached locally today.

Just as amazing, there is currently no snow on the field. Last year about this time over 38 inches of snow had fallen during the winter.

Coming off a 28-22 season and an appearance in the Northern Sun conference tournament, the Marauders under second year head coach Angelena Mexicano open the 2012 season February 10 when U-Mary faces Regis in Las Vegas, NV.

The Marauders return six defensive starters, their designated player and three pitchers. Juniors Jessica Alvarado, an outfielder, and infielder Melissa Gonzalez both earned All-Northern Sun honors last season. Senior catcher Desi Smith and sophomore infielder Allison Brown both drove in 52 runs in 50 games.
