Smith Sets Career High in Marauders Loss to Beavers

Box Score Bismarck, ND – Another outstanding performance from Damon Smith wasn't enough for the University of Mary in a 72-65 home loss to Bemidji State University. The senior forward ripped up the Northern Sun's third place squad for a career-high 29 points.

Smith was an impressive 12-of-19 from the field and led all players with 29 points. He also had six rebounds and two assists. One of the top shot blockers in the conference, Smith swatted away three shots. It was the fifth time in six games Smith has scored at least 19 points. He also played at 40 minutes for the second consecutive game.

Alex Dorr added 16 points for U-Mary. He also pulled down a game-high nine rebounds and made three steals. Deadly behind the arc, Dorr nailed all four of his three-point attempts. This is the second straight game the junior forward has gone 4-of-4 behind the arc and has now made eight straight treys.

Josh Turner added three treys for the Marauders and scored 11 points. Mike Johnson had five assists.

James Ellisor overcame a slow start and led Bemidji State with 16 points. Off the bench, Jake Schalow had 15 points and David Berthene scored 10.

The Marauders opened up the game on a 12-4 run with Smith scoring half the U-Mary points. The Beavers, who received a vote in the NACB top 25 poll last week, battled back and take a 21-19 lead. Turner then knotted the game on a layup before the Beavers slowly pulled away to lead 37-29 at intermission.

The Beavers would go on a 17-5 run early in the second half to build a 54-37 lead, eventually going up by as many as 20 points. U-Mary would close the night on a 14-1 run.
Both teams shot the ball well; BSU connected at a 50 per cent clip and U-Mary at 49 per cent. The Marauders held a 33-26 rebounding edge but the Beavers committed just eight turnovers to 16 for U-Mary.

The Marauders slip to 4-14 overall and 3-11 in the NSIC. The Beavers improve to 15-5 and 10-4.

U-Mary closes out the weekend at home against the University of Minnesota Duluth on Saturday, January 28, at 6 PM.
