Damon Smith had another big night offensively for the University of Mary but the Marauders were unable to contain Bemidji State University in an 82-61 loss. U-Mary trailed by just one point at intermission but a barrage of three-pointers by the Beavers proved too much to overcome.
Smith kept the Marauders (2-8 overall, 1-5 NSIC) close in the opening half, scoring 16 of his 20 points before intermission. U-Mary led much of the first half but took their last lead on a layup by Alex Dorr for a 27-26 advantage. After a three-pointer by BSU (9-3, 4-2), a jumper by Smith would even the game at 29-29. A trey by Dermaine Cockrell allowed BSU to regain the lead just before half and BSU never trailed again.
After holding the Beavers offense in check the first half, the Marauders had no answer in the second as Bemidji State shot 56.7 per cent from the field and made a staggering 10-of-11 three point attempts. During a 20-2 run to push the BSU lead to 63-35, the Beavers knocked down four treys.
For the game, BSU would make 15 three pointers in 20 attempts.
Coming off a 23 point game at Minnesota Duluth on Friday, Smith added five rebounds and two blocks to his 20 points against the Beavers. Josh Turner hit five treys for U-Mary and scored all 15 of his points from behind the arc. Jalen Jaspers added 12 points and three assists. Dorr had a team-high nine rebounds and added eight points while Baley Johnson had three blocks.
Cockrell led BSU with 21 points and James Ellisor contributed 20.
The Marauders return to the court January 2 when U-Mary hosts nationally ranked Winona State University.
