One day after leading the University of Mary women’s indoor track and field team to its first relay championship of the NCAA era, Melissa Agnew further etched her name into the Marauders history books by winning the school’s first individual title.

Now an 11-time NCAA All-American, Agnew proved why she was the top-seeded runner in the mile. The lone runner to hit the automatic qualifying standards in the mile this season, the senior from Onamia, MN, pulled away over the final lap and posted a time of 4:46.94 to win by nearly three seconds. Lisa Ohberg of Cal State – Los Angeles placed second in 4:49.61. The lone returning All-American in the mile, Agnew placed fourth in the event last year. She also earned All-American honors in the mile as a sophomore when she finished eighth.

Agnew is the first U-Mary student-athlete to win an individual championship in any sport during the Marauders NCAA era (2006-current). She also ran the last leg on the U-Mary Distance Medley Relay team that claimed the school’s first NCAA championship on Friday. Agnew teamed with Dakota Wolf, Kathryn Stewart and Brienna Lynch to set a school mark in the DMR and record the third fastest time in NCAA Division II history.
