BILLINGS, MT – A pair of
Dina Polanco goals just moments apart lifted the University of Mary women's soccer team to their first win of the season. Scoring twice deep into the first half, the Marauders knocked off Rimrock Classic host MSU Billings 3-0.
The reigning Northern Sun Newcomer of the Year, Polanco delivered her first goal 35:44 into the match.
Matilda Walker played a long ball over the top of the defense. In a race between Polanco and Yellowjackets goalkeeper Tenley Leffler, the Guatemalan national team performer got there first and headed the ball into the back of the net from 12 yards away.
Polanco doubled the Marauders lead just 150 seconds later when she smashed a ball into the upper right corner of the net. She now has three goals this season.
With the Marauders defense putting the clamps on the Yellowjackets attack, UMary closed the scoring when
Alex Guinn headed home a cross from
Addison Massey in the 79
th minute.
Chloe Brand also earned an assist on the goal.
The goal was her first collegiate counter for Guinn, a freshman from Spokane, WA.
Making her first collegiate start for UMary and appearing in her second game, freshman goalkeeper
Elena Van Heukelom made five saves as the native of Seeshaupt, Germany, recorded a clean sheet.
The Marauders held the edge in shots (22-10) and shots on frame (12-6). The Yellowjackets had a 7-5 advantage in corner kicks.
UMary remains on the road as the Marauders open Northern Sun action at St. Cloud State University on Friday, September 11, at 5 pm.
