BISMARCK, ND – Pairing spectacular saves by
Kadyn Dilger with a goal from
Lily Schatz, the University of Mary women's soccer team earned a 1-0 win over visiting University of Minnesota Duluth. The victory is the third straight for UMary, all by identical 1-0 scores at home.
The UMary win pulls the Marauders (4-2-2 overall, 3-1-1 Northern Sun) into a tie for third place in the NSIC standings with the Bulldogs (4-2-2, 3-1-1), who opened the day tied for first place in the standings. And depending on the result of the Minot State University-Bemidji State University match Friday night, the Marauders could move into a tie for second place with a win by MSU in the battle of the Beavers. BSU entered the weekend tied for first place and is the Marauders next opponent.
With both teams pressing early for a goal, Dilger skied to punch a long shot over the crossbar in the 12
th minute to keep the game scoreless.
Schatz gave the Marauders the lead in the 24
th minute. Pouncing on a loose ball just outside the goal box, the freshman lasered a left-footed shot just inside the left post from 8 yards out.
Dilger and the UMary defense then took control of the game, limiting the Bulldogs to six shots in the second half with three on frame.
Forced to make three saves in the first half, Dilger made another three in the second half, all coming in the final 20 minutes of play.
After
Alex Guinn made a sliding tackle in the box in the 76' to prevent a shot on goal, Dilger came up with another spectacular save in the 80'. Diving to her left on a shot attempt from inside the box, the junior smothered the ball on the goal line to preserve the UMary lead.
Dilger finished the game with six saves to earn her third straight clean sheet and the 11
th of her career.
Both teams finished with 12 shots and six on frame. UMD held a 5-4 advantage in corner kicks.
The Marauders close out their four-game home stand on Sunday, September 27, when UMary hosts Bemidji State. Game time is 1 pm at the MDU Resources Community Bowl.
